Looking for a way into the the Class 4A Division I playoffs, the Columbia Roughnecks will get an opportunity to extend their season on Friday as they host Sealy at Griggs Field.

The 7:30 p.m. kickoff will feature the Roughnecks (1-4, 4-5) against the Tigers (2-3, 3-6) who are meeting for just the sixth time on the gridiron.

“We are excited about it, we dug ourselves a hole, but at least we have an opportunity to dig ourselves out of it,” Columbia coach Brent Mascheck said. “Here’s the scenario for us, if Needville wins, we have to win by five points, but if Brazosport beats Needville, then we just have to win.”

A win by the Roughnecks will place them in fourth place in District 12-4A and will pit them against Houston North Forest next week in bi-district play.

“Going into the game, we just want to win, but we cannot get caught up in how many points we have to win by,” Mascheck said.

“Sealy is going to be a stern test for us and they will present a lot of problems for us, but we have to eliminate our mental mistakes so it comes down to us.”

Columbia goes into the matchup with the third best offense in district, averaging 336.8 yards per game.

One of the reasons for the Roughnecks, who put 55 points on Brazosport last week, was because of junior tailback, Keithan Taylor who seemed to have another gear after running for 150 yards and scoring twice.

“He is so explosive and every time he touches the ball he has a chance to turn a ball game around,” Mascheck said. “We are going to try to get the ball in his hands as much as possible.”

Another added spark to the ‘Neck offense has been the insurgence of junior Jarrett Brown, whose running ability gives the Roughnecks another go-to guy.

“JB is a playmaker with the ball in his hands and is giving us a big spark to the offense,” Mascheck said.

“We have to try and get the ball in his hands so he can make big plays for us.”

The one thing about Brown is that he is a key contributor as a defensive back as well. So when he is not playing offense, Josh Jimenez (46-92, 645 yards, TD, 3 INTs) will run the offense.

“He’s done a tremendous job of running the offense and understanding it, and he just has to continue to be productive for us,” Mascheck said of Jimenez.

The senior was juggling snaps with junior Michael Carlson, who is out with an injury, which is why Brown took some snaps.

“We will see what the game dictates as far as the availability of JB, but we will do everything we can to win the ball game,” Mascheck said.

A returning player for the Roughnecks is James McLaren, who broke an ankle during training camp, but saw a few snaps against Needville and more last week against Brazosport.

“He is a full-go for this week and we will have him playing some defensive end and linebacker,” Mascheck said.

“The key defensively for us is that we are playing a lot of people to keep them fresh. The key for us again defensively is not giving up the big plays.”

Sealy’s offense is averaging 280.1 yards a game led by sophomore quarterback Garrett Zaskoda (91-177, 1,192 passing yards, 5 TDs, 11 INTs) and wideouts Brennan Brandes (24-180) and Justin Eckardt (22-364 yards, TD).

Deshawn Davis (83-439 yards, 5.29 per carry, 5 TDs) leads the ground game for the Tigers.

“They blitz a ton and make plays, but we have to be patient,” Mascheck said.

“They also give up a lot of plays so our patience will play a part in this game. Offensively, they will throw a lot at us, but again, we must stay away from giving up the big plays.”
