SWEENY — An opportunity to clinch a playoff spot slipped through the fingers of the Sweeny Bulldogs Friday night as they fell to Sinton 14-7 in a District 15-4A Division II game.

Sweeny (2-2, 5-4) will now have to beat Aransas Pass on the road next week to make its way into the postseason.

“It’s going to be an important week for us,” Sweeny coach Randy Lynch said. “We’ve got to make that long trip. Bottom line is our kids have got to be ready to play. If they want to extend their season, they’ve got to be ready to play.”

Offensive momentum was hard to come by for the Bulldogs as they lost three fumbles and had an interception in the contest.

“Turnovers get you beat every time,” Lynch said. “We had opportunities all night long on this side of the field to get points and we didn’t do it.”

The biggest turnover of the game came with 8:52 left in the fourth quarter. With the Bulldogs backed up on their own 2-yard line, the Pirates (2-2, 7-2) were able the knock the ball loose and recover it.

One play later, Anthony Villarreal made his way into the end zone to help give the Pirates a 14-7 advantage.

“That one was on me,” Lynch said. “I probably should have called timeout down there.”

Even with their struggles offensively, Sweeny still had a chance to tie or perhaps win the game in the final seconds. A 41 screen pass from quarterback Evan Green to Donovan Banks got the Bulldogs down to the Sinton 32. The drive stalled at that point and on fourth down a pass to an open Ashton Callahan slipped through his fingers and the Pirates took over on downs.

“Sinton has a good program,” Lynch said. “Their kids play hard. They were scrambling for a win too and they got it done.”

Sinton took a 7-0 lead on the opening play of the second quarter when Tristan Canales broke loose on a 54-yard run with 11:45 left in the first half.

Canales finished the game with 124 yards on 11 carries.

The Bulldogs weren’t able to answer that score until late in the third quarter. They drove 73 yards in just four plays with Donovan Banks finishing the drive off with a 44-yard touchdown run with just 54 seconds remaining in the quarter.

It was part of a big night for Banks, who rushed for 145 yards on 18 carries.

Even though Sweeny’s offense had its struggles, its defense was able to match Sinton’s defensive intensity.

The Bulldogs’ D picked up three turnovers of its own as it limited the Pirates to 299 yards of offense. Everett Alford and Jordan Jones each had an interception while Malik Willer recovered a fumble.

“I think our defense played well. Well enough to win,” Lynch said. “Offensively we didn’t move the ball at all and we had too many turnovers.”
