FREEPORT — The Columbia Roughnecks rolled into Hopper Field on Thursday and completely dominated the Brazosport Exporters 55-7 in a District 12-4A Division I showdown, keeping its playoff chances alive.

Columbia, who improved to 1-5 in district play and 4-5 overal, will need some help starting today.

“It sets up a big game with Sealy next week and will have a lot of playoff implications, if Bay City beats Sealy tomorrow,” Columbia coach Brent Mascheck said. “We dug ourselves in a hole and like we told the kids, we have to dig ourselves out of that hole and all we want is a chance in that last game.”

Bay City will be at Sealy today.

After a slow start for both teams in the first quarter, it was Columbia junior Jarrett Brown who took over under center and got the Roughnecks moving. He did so with his legs after picking up 60 yards on his first three carries from scrimmage.

“I thought JB came in tonight and gave a spark to our offense and the entire team just rose to the occasion tonight,” Mascheck said. “We’ve been looking at doing some things with Jarrett on offense, but he was doing so well defensively. But he just had that spark to us offensively tonight. I thought it was a great team victory.”

The Roughnecks finally got on the board with :50 seconds left before the end of the first period after each team had traded turnovers. A 33-yard gallop by Brown was one of the big plays on the drive, which ended with Keithan Taylor breaking a 15-yard run into the end zone to make it 7-0.

After Brazosport’s Ashton Dudley had a 50-yard kickoff return to the Roughneck 16-yard line called back to the Exporter 44 yard line, the Columbia defense rose up on the next play as Tranquail Harris picked off Jarvis Davis on first down and returned it 43 yards for a pick-six, making it 14-0 after Karch Kaspar’s extra point.

Columbia continued to ride the run game as they amassed 187 yards in the first half on 19 carries, led by Taylor with 91 of those yards on just nine carries. Brown also had 67 yards on just four carries.

Brown and Saylaion Dunlap added second quarter touchdowns as the Roughnecks headed into the locker room with a 27-0 lead, spoiling homecoming for the Ships.

“The kids have been playing well, but we’ve been playing some good teams,” Mascheck said. “We’ve been making some mistakes, but I thought we jumped on them well early on and defensively we played outstanding.”

Brazosport (0-5, 1-8) was held to just 45 yards of offense with three first downs in the first half as they were without the district’s leading rusher in junior Ameer King, who was on the sidelines with a walking boot on his right foot.

Most of Columbia’s starters played a majority of the third quarter as Taylor only ran the ball twice in the second half for 59 yards. One of those was a 43-yard jaunt into the end zone. Dunlap also played sparingly, getting four carries for 71 yards and a score.

The Roughneck run game had 24 carries in the second half for 266 yards and four more touchdowns in the final 24 minutes of play. For the game, Columbia’s offense gained 470 total yards.

Taylor led the ground game for the ’Necks with 10 carries for 150 yards, Brown was next with just 6 carries for 127 yards and Dunlap gained 93 yards on 15 carries.

Brazosport’s offense was limited to 153 yards on the night as they were forced to go to the air without the running capability of King in the backfield. Davis finished the night going 18-for-34 on the night for 104 yards and a couple of interceptions.

There were a few dropped balls by the Ships that could have really helped the offense.

“Brazosport is a good team and by looking at some of the scores from some of the teams they’ve played, they’ve played everyone close,” Mascheck said. “But again, I thought we took them out early and offensively we just clicked well tonight.”

The Ships only score came with under a minute to play when David Luera caught a 2-yard score from Davis. Columbia will host those Tigers at Griggs Field on Nov. 4 while the Ships will close out the season at Needville.

So according to this, the necks aren't eliminated yet?

El campo, Stafford and Bay city are in. Brazosport is out.

If sealy loses to BC tonight and needville beats Bport next week as expected, WC, needville and Sealy would be in a 3 way tie for 4th place all at 2-4.

Who gets in? Is the tiebreak points?

This is what I've been hearing....

BC needs to beat Sealy tonight, Necks need to beat Sealy by at least 11 next week to get the 4th spot.

So is needville out regardless of the outcomes next week? Without knowing details of the tie break rules I think this is how it would work:

Needville has already played both Sealy and WC and has a -4 point differential in those games (-7 against Sealy and +3 against WC). Either sealy or WC will have a better differential next week.

Sealy currently has a +7 differential and WC currently has a -3 differential. So WC needs to win by 5 or more next week to get in the playoffs? That would give Sealy a +2 differential and WC a +2 differential but WC has the head to head over Sealy? Idk....
