Struggling Ships host 'Necks in district action

FREEPORT— After a seventh straight loss, the Brazosport Exporters find themselves out of the playoff picture with two games to go.

Still, Exporter coach Ben Rudolph just wants to see his team finish the season strong and continue to improve as they prepare for today’s 7 p.m. District 12-4A Division I matchup with the Columbia Roughnecks at Hopper Field.

“We want to see the team to continue to develop and get better each week no matter where we are,” Rudolph said. “Our mantra has been to make each day better than the day before. We want to see great effort in the ball game and we want to put some quality stuff on film so we can continue to get better as program.”

As rough as things have been for Brazosport (0-4, 1-7), things haven’t been too much better for Columbia (0-4, 3-5).

Columbia comes into to Hopper field having lost four games — all in district play — in a row after starting off 3-1.

The ’Necks come in forth in the district on offense, averaging 307 yards per game, thanks in part to running back Saylaion Dunlap, who has rushed for 685 yards and nine touchdowns to lead the team.

Dunlap’s numbers are good for fourth in the district, which makes tonight’s matchup between two of the district’s top rushers as Brazosport’s Ameer King still leads the district with 1,042 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Other than King’s production, there has been little coming from the rest of the Ship offense, as they are last in the district, averaging just 273 per game.

Rudolph hopes that can change this week and believes it can be done through the air. That is, if the receivers can hold on to the passes thrown their way.

In their loss to Bay City, Brazosport’s dropped passes tally went into the double digits.

“We had 12 drops against Bay City. That’s something we’ve really harped on this week was the fundamentals of catching the football,” Rudolph said. “Jarvis Davis did a great job of passing the football and a decent job of handling the rush, but we can’t have 12 drops in this offense and make a ball game of it. We feel if we eliminated half of those drops, it could have been a different ball game.”

One receiver who didn’t have too much of a problem hauling in passes was Ship receiver Jalen Johnson, who had eight catches for 80 yards last week against Bay City.

They will see another strong defense in Columbia, who is fifth in the district, giving up 289 yards to opponents this season. Brazosport’s defense is last, allowing 359 yards per game.

Despite their record, Rudolph knows competing with the ’Necks tonight won’t be a cakewalk.

“Columbia is a good program and they’ve had some close losses,” Rudolph said.

“One or two plays here and there and you’re looking at a different win loss record. They play great defense and they move the ball well on offense. They’re a challenge for anybody to play and they will be one for us."
