FREEPORT — The Stafford Spartans lived up to their ranking Friday night.

The Spartans exploded for 48 first-half points on the way to a 69-8 victory over the Brazosport Exporters at Hopper Field.

The win kept Stafford, which is ranked as the No. 5 Class 4A, Division I team in the state, undefeated in district play at 4-0 (5-3 overall). The Spartans’ three nondistrict losses came via forfeit after self-reporting themselves to the UIL for an unnamed player who did not meet the attendance threshold. With the loss, Brazosport falls to 0-3 in district play (1-7 overall).

Against the Exporters, the Spartans quickly put the game away, jumping out to a 20-0 first-quarter lead and stretching the advantage to 48-0 at the half.

Offensively, Stafford accumulated 405 yards of total offense in the first half alone, with 228 of those yards coming through the air by quarterback Walter White. Not to be outdone, running back James Brown had 130 rushing yards and four touchdowns, all coming in the opening two quarters.

Accentuating Stafford’s quick-strike ability, the Spartans had eight plays go for more than 25 yards before halftime.

By the time the game ended, Stafford finished with 543 yards of total offense, with Brown rushing for 183 yards and White ending with 251 yards passing, completing nine of 15 passes. Both players exited the game after the first drive of the second half.

At the same time, Stafford’s defense was just as impressive, keeping Brazosport’s offense in check throughout the game. One of the Exporters’ bright spots, however, was running back Ameer King, who finished with 145 rushing yards on 24 carries.

King scored Brazosport’s lone touchdown when he broke loose for a 31-yard scoring dash late in the final quarter. Jermaine Ellis ran in the two-point conversion.

Earlier in the second half, Brazosport had another prime scoring opportunity, going on a 13-play drive down to the Stafford 1-yard line.

However, the Spartans proceeded to stop the Exporters on four consecutive plays inside the 5-yard line.

Stafford’s defense also forced four turnovers, with one of those resulting in a touchdown after a fumble was recovered in the end zone. The Spartans also turned in a big play on special teams, blocking a third-quarter punt and scooping up the loose ball for a touchdown.

Stafford scored 21 points in the second half, with 14 of those points coming after White and Brown left the game.

Next up for the Exporters is a road contest at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Bay City.
