INGLESIDE — Needing a bounce-back win to build toward a postseason berth, the Sweeny Bulldogs feasted a bit with a 50-13 win against the Ingleside Mustangs on Friday at Mustang Stadium.

The District 15-4A Division II win puts the Bulldogs at 1-1 on the season and 4-3 overall. Sweeny, coming off a three-point loss at home a week ago to state-ranked Cuero, never showed signs of a hangover.

“We needed this one so we could rebound from last week,” Sweeny coach Randy Lynch said. “But they played well last week, and you sometimes worry about a letdown, but our kids really responded.”

More then 300 yards of offense in the second half put the game away after Sweeny built a 23-7 lead at halftime.

The Mustangs (0-2, 0-7) came out of the intermission and took the ball 60 yards on eight plays. Running back Nic Patrick, who had a touchdown negated by a penalty, finally got into the end zone on a 3-yard plunge.

Ingleside’s two-point conversion try failed, keeping Sweeny’s lead at 23-13.

Sweeny didn’t flinch, coming right back as senior quarterback Evan Green sliced up the defense, running outside then turning his run back inside. The 48-yard trip to the end zone made it 29-15.

Harrison Hassell then gave Sweeny the ball right back with an interception which set the Bulldogs up at their own 33-yard line.

Green again used his toughness as he busted several tackles on a 34-yard run to set up another touchdown. Senior Donovan Banks finished up that drive by going straight up the middle for 21 yards and a 36-15 advantage after Juan Jurado’s extra point.

Sweeny and Green didn’t let up as the quarterback continued to show his moves, going through a couple of tacklers into the end zone for 24 yards and a 43-15 advantage with 23.4 seconds left in the third period.

Headed toward another score in the final stanza, Sweeny’s Quinton Martin coughed up the ball at the one.

Ingleside took over but so did Sweeny’s defense as linebacker Samuel Romero recovered a fumble in the end zone for the Bulldogs’ final points of the night after Jurado’s extra point.

Things will not get easy for Sweeny with the next two games against Wharton and top-ranked Sinton.

“We know what Wharton presents. They are very athletic and have a lot of speed, but we have to prepare for them,” Lynch said. “We are going to enjoy this tonight and come tomorrow start working for them. That is just the way it is.”

Sweeny had a quick start to the game, going 57 yards in six plays on its first drive, capped by Green showing off his speed on a 37-yard score. A two point conversion put the Bulldogs up 8-0 with 9:12 left in the first quarter.

But inconsistency and penalties hurt the Bulldog offense the next couple of series.

“They did some things a little differently than what we thought, but for the most part, they hung in there,” Lynch said of Ingleside.

The Mustangs came within a point of the Bulldogs, 8-7, in the second quarter when Patrick scored on a 3-yard run.

Ingleside helped keep Sweeny’s next drive alive with an offside on fourth and three. Banks then reeled off an 18-yard run and Green connected with Hassell for a 34-yard gain to put the Bulldogs at the one. Banks punched it in from there.

With less than a minute before halftime, Banks again showed his move and speed, going for 49 yards into the end zone for a 23-7 margin.

“They both ran the ball extremely well, but those guys up front opened up some holes for them and they don’t get enough credit,” Lynch said. “They are getting better and better each week, and that is what it is going to take for us to be a good football team.”

Banks finished with 150 yards on 17 carries and Green had 142 on 11. The quarterback also was 9-for-15 for 130 yards through the air with a score.
