Many experts across the state expected the Cuero Gobblers to roll into Bulldog Stadium last week and blow away Sweeny in a District 15-4A Division II matchup.

Instead, the Bulldogs put up quite a fight and almost upset the third-ranked Gobblers, who had to rally in the second half to head home with a 21-18 win.

“Our kids played hard for four quarters and that is what we have been preaching all along,” Sweeny coach Randy Lynch said. “They played well against Cuero, and our kids are starting to believe what we are trying to do. A lot of credit goes to those kids and the coaching staff. They had a good game plan for them.”

Moving forward, the Bulldogs (0-1, 3-3) will take a two-hour trip southeast to encounter Ingleside (0-1, 0-6) in another important district contest.

The Mustangs have scored only 55 points for the season and are coming off a 52-0 loss to Wharton in their sidtrict opener last week.

“They are playing a lot of young kids right now and have had some injuries as well, but that is part of it,” Lynch said of the Mustangs. “He’s got a young ball club. They are playing at home and we have a pretty good trip to take, but it should be a good ball game. They do have some young talent.”

Ingleside is averaging just a tad more then 150 yards offensively. The Mustanks are led by sophomore quarterback Marty Hinijosa, who is 38-99 for 544 yards, with six touchdowns and six interceptions. Six other players have attempted at least one pass.

Senior wideouts Adam Herrera (7-151, 21.6 per catch, TD) and Jermaine Brown (6-153, 25.5 per catch, two TDs) are two of Hinijosa’s favorite targets.

Junior Nick Patrick (143-218 yards, two TDs) leads the ground game, with seven other runners combining for zero yards on 68 carries.

Sweeny’s offense gained 252 yards against Cuero and senior quarterback Evan Green was 5-for-9 for 81 yards passing and no interceptions. Green (12-72 rushing, two TDs) also led the ground game, and Donovan Banks (16-62 rushing) was held to 3.9 yards per carry by the Gobbler defense.

“Consistency, that is what we are trying to do, from both sides of the ball,” Lynch said.

In the only other meeting between the Bulldogs and Mustangs, it was Sweeny earning a 27-10 bidistrict playoff win back in 2010.
