Gladewater over Gilmer? Gilmer is their Achille's heel. Gilmer has won 13 in a row dating back to 2001 although many have been nail biters. Should be interesting.

Well shoot fire; us DownLowers in D1 District 13 & D2 District 9 have it made! I guess we'd better play the games though just in case.

You'll have to go slummin' on that other board if you want a Gilmer/Gladewater thread ... or any east Texas thread, for that matter.

I don't think they have the internet in Gladewater yet. The 5 or 6 that do are over on smoaky.

I think if I were a dentist I could get rich in Gladewater. Then again, maybe not. There's not too many people over there that have teeth. :D

If there were ever a year where the Bares have a chance to beat us, it would be this year. Our defense just hasn't proven they can stop the run, and that's what Gladewater is good at. Although I don't disagree, we are 7-point underdogs at HOME? How long has it been since that has happened?

I'd agree that they have the formula to beat Gilmer, and maybe this is finally the Bears' year. But there's such a mental hurdle to overcome when you haven't beaten a team since a lot of the players were born. Plus, it's just so dang hard to bet against Gilmer, just because of how good the offense can be. LE ran for about 1,000 yards against Gilmer, it seemed like, and they still couldn't win. Nacogdoches is a team that can run the rock really well, and they still couldn't win. Just because you can run and gain ground against the Buckeyes doesn't guarantee you anything. You've still got to find a way to stop the Buckeyes' offense, and not many people have been able to do that. Carthage seemed to be able to do that, and I'm certain Gladewater has studied the heck out of that film to see what wrinkles the Bulldogs threw at Gilmer.

Regardless of outcome, these are two playoff teams that not many people are going to want to face come November. Friday's game may not match that 2014 classic, but it should be another good one.

I seriously think that Gladewater's defense is much better than L-E or Nacogdoches. While our defensive woes are still being addressed, our offense has been turning the ball over, too -- not a good combination if you plan on winning any game against a good team. If we can avoid turnovers, get into an offensive rhythm, and get some stops defensively, we can beat just about anybody. If we don't, we are just another above average team -- not an elite team. The frustrating part for me as a fan is knowing the potential and talent are there. I'm pretty sure you can relate to that.

I don't know how this game is going to go for sure, but everything seems to be pointing to a Bare victory. If there is ONE TEAM I love to BEAT, it's GLADEWATER.

We are underdogs to our most hated rival. It has been many years since that has happened. We MUST PROTECT OUR HOUSE!

We seem to play to our competition level. If we play a bad team we don't look so good. If we play a good team we look a little better. THIS drives me crazy!!

The Buckeyes have lost their swagger. When Traylor was here, like him or not, we had the IT factor. We are still good and we are still a dangerous team.......but gone are the times of walking on the field with the other team wondering how bad they were fixing to get smoked. The Bucks are scratching and clawing for everything they get these days.

And I don't say this to be negative. Coach Turner has a different style and that's ok. It just ain't easy anymore and if we don't find some defense........we are going to get our tails kicked on Friday night.

It's fun to be the top dog ain't it:D ........just don't screw it up, because the whole state won't forget. Ask 2004 Decatur........or 2006 Gilmer. When you get real good, everybody wants to see you lose

Oh believe me I know. I was there in person in 1988 at Kyle Field at the state finals for the Paris fiasco and yet again in Dallas against Ennis in 2000, both times as HEAVY favorites. Thus my innate fear of being a favorite.

Not but about three nail-biters tops in those years since 2001. It's three if you count the 21-13 game in 2012. It didn't really go down to the wire, but Gilmer was behind for three quarters, IIRC.

39 - 2002 - 21
59 - 2003 - 6
42 - 2004 - 0
48 - 2005 - 13
49 - 2006 - 21
53 - 2007 - 17
43 - 2008 – 8
67 - 2009 – 12
36 - 2010 – 35
55 - 2011 - 19
21 - 2012 - 13
52 - 2013 - 14
41 - 2014 - 35

But in all seriousness, I hope you boys enjoyed that IT factor and mystique while it lasted. It's hard, maybe impossible to get back once it's gone. But I grew up, played and graduated in a time when people were scared to death to play Celina. I'd love to see those good times return to the Orange and White someday soon.

One small difference is you guys moved up a classification and still had some success. We are still playing in the same class. Maybe even down a class if you look at how the divisions are divided. It just comes down to we need better defense. The offense has hardly ever missed a beat.

So far Turner's winning percentage is just over 90 percent based on a record of 19-2 to date, which is even a couple of percentage points better than what it was before.

As long as the Buckeyes win over 90 percent of their games, I couldn't care less about "swagger."

That swagger has helped us win many games. But you are correct. 90%is damn hard to argue with. I actually am quite the Turner fan. And I'm certainly not the guy in the stands every week screaming "run the damn ball". Lol

I'm probably going to take a lashing for this, but I've never liked our defensive scheme. No, you can't argue with the results from the past. The only thing that has kept us from being even more dominant is the defensive scheme, in my opinion. Maybe it's time for a change, but I don't think that'll ever happen because of tenure and championships. Turner is a very good coach, and is one of the best offensive minds in the game, but our team reminds me of all those Texas Tech teams that could score at will, but couldn't stop anybody. Personally, I think we can do much better with the talent we have if we had a better defensive scheme.

But..., I know nothing, and don't get paid for my football mind. Let's the coaches coach, waterboy!

I could've sworn I heard you scream that a few times! :D

90% is hard to argue with, but just imagine if our defense were good every year. How dominant would our program be? I am an old school defensive minded guy, but I absolutely love Turner's offensive mind.

The last time Highway 271 rivals Gladewater and Gilmer met was in the third round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs in 2014 on the day after Thanksgiving. What transpired that night at Longview’s Lobo Stadium will forever be a part of East Texas lore, as Gilmer scored with nine seconds remaining for a thrilling 41-35 victory in front of an overflow crowd estimated at 15,000 fans. Bring it on Bears.

Yep, it will be a full stadium. Our stadium supposedly sits 7150 now. This would be the first time since the home side was rebuilt that it will be filled to capacity and then some. I remember there being many big games where we had 8 to 9000, or more in our stadium when it would barely seat 5000.

2007 vs. Tatum comes to mind. There were way more people in that stadium than what should have been allowed. I've been told they won't allow it to get that crowded this Friday. They have added about 180 seats in one of the endzones which will help out a little.

Those Tatum and Daingerfield games from those years were huge in attendance. I think our stadium will be full this Friday for the first time since the home side rebuild. There are people from other towns talking about coming to this one. Good thing I have reserved seats. Of course there will likely be the spattering of empty orange seats on the home side as usual.
