EL CAMPO — Standing on the Brazosport sideline Friday at Ricebird Stadium was former Ship Jeremiah Credit, a player the Exporters could have used in their encounter with No. 12-ranked El Campo.

Credit, now playing at Texas Southern University, was a standout with the Exporters during his time.

El Campo totaled 476 offensive yards in an impressive 52-20 win to remain unbeaten in District 12-4A Division I action play at 3-0 and overall at 7-0.

Brazosport, 0-2 in district and 1-5 overall, was just outmanned by the Ricebirds.

“Up front they have a good offensive line and they established that line of scrimmage pretty early in the contest,” Brazosport coach Ben Rudolph said. “We got down and gave them two short fields off a turnover or a short punt, whatever it was. I did challenge them at the half, that we were going to come out and play hard. In fact, I told them that the goal was to come out and score and get a two-point conversion to make it a two-possession game. I loved the fact that we came out and threw the ball and put the ball in the end zone and have an opportunity to go for that two, so the energy was good.”

Down 38-14 at halftime, Ameer King took a lateral from Jarvis Davis on Brazosport’s first offensive play of the second half and completed a 43-yarder to Joseph Martinez. From there, the running and pass-catching of King combined with the scrambling of Davis got the Ships into the end zone, capped by a 10-yard run by King for his third touchdown of the night.

But the two-point conversion failed and the Ricebirds still led, 38-20.

Davis returned to the field for the first time since injuring a shoulder in Brazosport’s first scrimmage back in August. But on his first pass of the night, the ball was a bit underthrown to an open wide receiver, and El Campo’s Kyle Mamerow grabbed it for the interception.

“Jarvis is an excellent leader for us and is going to make plays for us,” Rudolph said. “Our kids respond to him, so he is just going to get better and better.”

It took the Ricebirds three plays to cover 50 yards, with Deaderick Hollaway scoring from the 44-yard line with 7:45 left in the first quarter.

El Campo continued to impose its will on the Ship defense, as Hollaway and junior Nery Enriquez combined for 20 carries, 238 yards and four touchdowns on the ground in the first half for the big lead.

Enriquez, who finished with 185 yards on 18 carries, had scoring runs of 57 and a yard in the opening two quarters. Hollaway found the end zone on runs of 44 and 22 yards on his way to 178 yards on 15 carries fore the night.

Davis’ return is a good thing for the Exporters, but his timing was off with his receivers. He did look more relaxed in the second half despite being pressured a majority of the night and finished with 160 passing yards while completing half of his 30 attempts.

“A little more practice time would have been great, but we are going to take what we can get with him out there,” Rudolph said.

King, the district’s leading rusher coming into the contest, had a tough time against the Ricebird defense, running for just 42 yards on seven carries.

He still did some damage, though. In the second quarter with the ball at their own 23, Davis scrambled to avoid a couple of would-be tacklers and dumped to ball to King in some open space. The junior did the rest, sliding up the field to the sideline and outrunning the defense to make it a 21-7 score with 8:43 before halftime.

King again showed his shiftiness just before the half after the Ricebirds took a 38-7 lead. The speedster took the kickoff at his own 12, scrambled up the middle of the field and through some defenders for another touchdown.

Brazosport’s tough road in district continues as state-ranked Stafford comes to Hopper Field on Friday.
