BAY CITY — Columbia came close to erasing a 21-point, third-quarter deficit, but Bay City put up 13 unanswered points to squelch the rally and hand the Roughnecks a 41-22 loss Friday night.

The Roughnecks remain winless after three District 12-4A games, while the Blackcats improve to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in district.

“We’re not making any excuses,” Columbia head coach Brent Mascheck said. “Bay City did a good job. We were without a couple of starters in the secondary, but again, Bay City did really well and we gave up some big plays. Offensively, the first half, we couldn’t do a whole lot. Turnovers hurt us as well as penalties. We came out and played better in the second half. Now we have to come back and win the next three to get the playoffs. We have agood chance.”

The Blackcats compiled 212 yards of rushing from 30 carries while the Roughnec 37 rushes.

Bay City wide receiver Darryl Florez had 93 yards on six carries while Columbia’s running back Saylaion Dunlap had 87 yards from 23 carries.

Columbia quarterback Josh Jimenez went 9-of-21 for 100 yards and one interception, while Bay City quarterback Dylan Davidson went 14-of-17 for 223 yards and three touchdowns.

Florez caught seven passes for 83 yards and one touchdown.

Columbia, now 3-4 overall, struck first on a 4-yard run by Dunlap in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead while the Blackcats couldn’t get much going on offense early.

The Blackcats didn’t reach midfield until a handoff to wide receiver Prinard Payne for a 7-yard gain early in the second quarter. That gave Bay City some momentum, and it finally found the end zone on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Davidson to La’Darrion Florez with 7:29 left in the second quarter to tie the game.

Columbia looked like it would answer right back. A 15-yard penalty on the Blackcats on the ensuing kickoff gave the Roughnecbled at the 1, and Adam Smith recovered for the Blackcats.
