View Full Version : Brownwood (2-4) @ Stephenville (1-5)

It's that time of the season. Rivalry week! Some call it the Battle of 377. This year's match up should be one of the better games we've seen in a while between these two teams.

Brownwood is coming into this week 2-4 overall and 0-1 in district play. Some may say that Brownwood is technically 2-3 with the game against Alvarado called before half when the score was 7-6. Others think that Alvarado would have ended up winning if the game was played in full time. Who knows. Having been in several tight, down to the wire games up to this point, Brownwood will be looking to get their first district when. The largest point spread so far was last nights loss to Abilene Wylie, 35-13. In the other 5 games, the outcome was within 4 points or less and most not determined until the very end. They will be looking to knock off Stephenville to this week to prove they are a district contender. Keys to victory: Slow down Stephenville's offensive attack by limiting their time on the field and sustain long consistent offensive drives that result in points.

Stephenville is coming into this week 1-5 overall and 0-0 in district play with this being their first district game. Most outsiders are surprised that Stephenville is 1-5 and think this team will struggle to make the playoffs. Aside from 5A Cleburne and 5A Lubbock Monterey, Stephenville has been "in" all of the other games with their only handily beat Graham 55-28. That game might have been the turning point for Stephenville. Their offense can put up a lot of points lead by 2nd year starting QB Jones. There are quite a few new faces on this years Stephenville team with as many as 8-10 Sophomores on the field at any given time. The teams leading rusher, sophomore RB Nowak, has put up impressive numbers. Defensively, the Jackets are young with several sophomore's starting. They showed signs of growth against Graham in the second half of that game shutting them out with 8 consecutive drive ending stops. Keys to victory: Contain Brownwood's main threat #21 by playing sound defensive, get a few stops and continue to utilize the explosive up tempo offensive strategy that they've had success with so far this season.

Jackets blow up the lions this week. lions will be running back for the hills of the serengeti. lions have struggled against mediocre 4a teams and got beat by a decent wylie team. i thought this was going to be the lions year? NOT at least the Jackets schedule tougher competition.

Jackets 55-21

Very strange for a traditional powerhouse program like Stephenville to have two thin classes back to back with 1000 kids in the high school....

Technically you're correct. It would have been nice to see how that game would have played out. Same with the Wylie/Argyle game. That would have let us all know a little more where each team is in terms of tougher competition.

This weeks game between Stephenville and Brownwood should let us know more. It's shaping up to be a doozy!

The Serengeti? Really?

yes look it up.

The Serengeti is renowned for its large lion population and is one of the best places to observe prides in their natural environment. The region contains the Serengeti National Park (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serengeti_National_Park) in Tanzania and several game reserves (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_reserve). Including large colonies and swarms of Yellow Jackets. There have been known attacks on lions prides forcing them back into hiding in the bush. Lion prides have struggled the past 25 years battling the Yellow Jackets for stronghold on the land and have had no answer to their attack.

Stephenville down 21-3 at half.

Had two turnovers on their first two possessions that led to touchdowns.

Brownwood has only out-gained Stephenville 243 to 197. Yellow jackets just haven't been able to get it in.

The Likns also have three personal fouls, including a celebration on a 69-yd TD pass that was brought back to the 19. They did score on the next play though.

Always thought Brownwood was a bit more disciplined though.

I agree, although one was on a punt that I thought was going to be off setting and one was on the TD where the kid held the ball out at the three yard line.

Brownwood plays very aggressive defense and sometimes they just have a hard time slowing down.

I will say only three of the four have been for some kind of late hit though.

Rivalry getting the best of them right now.

Stephenville D is playing great, offense can't stop turning it over. Brownwood's D is solid, though. A lot of bend, but don't break tonight.

Once again, Stephenville gets in the red zone and penalties and tackles in the backfield result in no points and a turnover on downs.

Takeaways from tonight:
1. Stephenville is much better than people think, unless Brownwood sucks.
2. Brownwood has no passing game
3. Brownwood has a good defense.

Tough win Lions. Congratulations. Jackets didn't come out of this without several year ending injuries on key players. One was our best O line player and it showed in the second half. Our QB didn't have any time. Very very young Jacket team that will be tough to deal with for several years to come.

I think Stephenville is a better team than some think however Brownwood ripped Wylie at times last week passing. I hope something that happen while you were working in Brownwood did not make you jaded.

Next time Lions come to the Ville to play, the stadium will be totally changed. Lions will be sitting where the homeside currently is and a new homeside will be constructed where the visitor side is. Going to be nice!!

I'm just proud they put a loop around Dublin so we don't have to sit 100 cars deep waiting for the light to change.

As for the comment that Brownwood 'ripped Wylie' in the passing game? I must have been at a different game last week... saw them complete a few short/mid range passes but definitely not 'ripped'? Good luck to both Stephenville and Brownwood the rest of the way (well at least until the final district game when Ville comes to town... ;) ).

Yeah ripped was a bad choice of words. Compared to last nights passing is was much better.

It was good defensive game from late 2nd qtr on. The Lion DL owned the LOS and that was the difference IMO. The Jackets had negative rushing yards in the 2nd half and no time to throw the ball.

Agree with Sville. Most impressed with the toughness of the Jackets QB Jones, RB Nowak and Brownwood's QB Moore. RB Jefferson. Those 4 players took some hellacious hits. Unfortunately, we lost a 3 year starer OL Northcut and a first year starter OLB Graham to injury.

We should win the next 2 games and make the playoffs.

From my view... Jones was on his back every play because Stephenville refused to run any plays were a WR ran a route less then 20 yards from the LOS and never kept anyone in to protect...

So the Wood and Ville are a combined 3-9? Old district foe Mineral Wells has twice as many wins as both combined at 6-1. We finally get to where we can match up and they throw us in region II....But hey, Powerhouse Kennedale comes to Ramnation for the DQ game of the week this Friday....This one should be much more entertaining than Jackets/Lions this year.

Guess you will have to just beat up on Kennedale....I did like MW helmets last year when we played you in the third round. I'm also glad you scored that 6 points in the 4th quarter so you only got beat by 2 scores. Be careful what you wish for...:)

Lol, it's like last year all over again. You guys doubled the number of playoff wins in your school's history (two) and suddenly thought you were on the same playing field with Brownwood and Stephenville. If Brownwood had your schedule we'd be 6-1 or 7-0 too. And we aren't even very good this year.

I wasnt talking about last year...or 1968 for that matter. Im talking about now. You guys never give MW any kudos. All you ever do is keep tooting your own horns every year. I dont care about schedules...The bottom line is we are better this year. Ive been watching High School football since the mid 60's. I remember when the ville couldnt hold the woods jockstrap! MW just didnt get lucky enough to keep a good coach when we would finally get one..ie....Frank Bevers (Highland Park), Bob Patterson (SL Carroll) Joe Cluley (Wichita Falls)...all coached at MW prior to becoming winners elsewhere!!...How bout you guys for once let somebody else have a little glory...

You came on a Brownwood-Stephenville thread tooting your own horn. We weren't here tooting our horn. Why would we give you kudos on a Brownwood-Stephenville thread? The next time I hop over on a Mineral Wells thread I'll try to remember to say, "job well done." I didn't realize you were so sensitive and needed the reassurance for whipping up on so many powerhouses.

I think people in both Stephenville know that their team is down this year, and by the same token Brownwood's offense hasn't shown any consistency. But hey, I guess if you need to use a down year for Brownwood and Stephenville as a measuring stick for your own success, more power to you. I swear, you could beat Lake Worth by 14 and hear that Brownwood or Stephenville lost to a good 5A in OT and you'd come on here tooting your horn that ya'll got a win and we didn't. It's pretty sad actually.
