WEST COLUMBIA — Mistakes were a killer for the Columbia Roughnecks for the second straight week as they fell to state-ranked Stafford, 48-7, in a District 12-4A Division I game Friday night.

Three turnovers and a blocked punt led to four touchdowns for the Spartans in the first half, something Columbia (0-2, 3-3) could never overcome.

“When you play as bad as we did against a great team like Stafford, they expose you, and they did,” Columbia coach Brent Mascheck said. “They are a very good team, but we gave them a lot.”

It started out well for the Roughnecks as they drove to the Stafford 19 on their first possession of the game. Stafford’s Charles Hester recovered a Columbia fumble at the Spartan 23 to stop the threat with 7:56 left in the first quarter.

Stafford quarterback Walter White started working his chemistry with wide receiver Hezekiah Jones. The two connected on three touchdowns for the Spartans. Following Hester’s fumble recovery, Jones finished off a 77-yard drive when he caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from White with 4:14 left in the first quarter.

On Columbia’s next possession, Stafford’s Jalen Pitre intercepted a Columbia pass at the Roughneck 30. One play later, White found Jones for another touchdown with 3:07 left in the opening period.

At the beginning of the second quarter, Stafford’s Chris Brantley blocked a Columbia punt that was recovered at the Roughneck 34 with 11:51 left in the first half.

Just over a minute later, White connected with Jones again on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 10:55 left in the first half to put the Spartans up 20-0.

Just 23 seconds later, the Spartans score again when Myles Baker scooped up another Columbia fumble and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown.

White picked up his fourth touchdown pass of the first half just before halftime when he hooked up with running back James Brown on a screen pass that went 18 yards for a touchdown.

The Stafford junior quarterback finished the first half having completed 8-of-14 passes for 150 yards.

In the second half, Stafford stuck to the ground game as running back Cameron Montgomery scored on a 62-yard run with 5:47 left in the third quarter. The play finished off an 88-yard drive.

White put the capper on Stafford’s scoring when he plunged into the end zone from a yard out with 40 seconds left in the third to end a 67-yard drive.

The lone score for the Columbia offense came with 5:57 left in the fourth quarter when Jarrett Brown caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Michael Carlson.

Columbia will have to recover quickly from this loss as they prepare to face Bay City next week.

“We got to get ready to go because next week is a huge game with Bay City,” Mascheck said. “I tell them all the time whether it’s a big win or a big loss, we’ve got 24 hours to look at this and then start getting ready for Bay City next week. We will regroup and be ready.”
