SWEENY — On a night when he was named homecoming king, Donovan Banks lived up to the crown Friday night as he helped the Sweeny Bulldogs to a 35-21 victory over Edna.

Banks caught a touchdown pass, threw for another and ran in two more as the senior accounted for 233 yards of total offense.

“He finally started to find some room in the second half,” Sweeny coach Randy Lynch said. “Our guys on the offensive line did a great job of giving some push up front.”

The Bulldogs (3-2) were able to amass 370 yards of offense, with 282 yards coming on the ground. Banks had 150 yards rushing, most of that coming in the second half to seal the game.

Sweeny’s defense found a way to finally corral Edna quarterback Landon O’Connor and the Cowboy offense. After picking up 191 yards of total offense in the first half, the Bulldogs’ defense limited Edna to just 81 yards in the second half.

“I thought our effort was great,” Lynch said. “We knew it was going to be a tough, physical game. Their quarterback is a good football player.”

O’Connor finished with 101 yards rushing and passed for 77 more in the contest.

Banks started off the scoring in the first quarter when he took a swing pass from quarterback Evan Green and went 31 yards for the touchdown on a fourth-down play to help put the Bulldogs up 7-0.

The play capped a 35-yard drive that was set up when Jordan Jones recovered a fumble at the Edna 35 with 6:09 left in the opening period.

After the Cowboys tied the game on a 1-yard touchdown run by Brad Kucera to cap a 68-yard touchdown drive, the Bulldogs’ offense went on the march again.

Malik Willer finished a 68-yard drive with a 24-yard touchdown run with 4:41 left in the second quarter to put Sweeny in the lead again.

O’Connor retied the game at 14 with a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 2:21 left in the first half. The play finished a 75-yard drive.

Banks got a chance to show off his passing arm on a fake punt when he found Jones, who scampered 52 yards for the score to give Sweeny a 21-14 lead at halftime.

“It was a called play,” Lynch said. “If it wasn’t there, he would have kicked it.”

The score stayed that way until the 2:17 mark of the third quarter, when Banks broke loose on a 40-yard run to put Sweeny up 28-14.

It was Banks who finished off the scoring for the Bulldogs with 7:14 left in the fourth quarter when he capped a 63-yard drive with a 29-yard touchdown run.

Cade Orsak picked up Edna’s final touchdown with 2:57 left in the game on a 7-yard pass from Reese Orsak.

The Bulldogs take next week off before they start District 15-4A Division II play at home against Cuero.
