Columbia faces speedy La Marque

WEST COLUMBIA — Columbia Roughneck coach Brent Mascheck could not have asked for a better bounce-back performance than last week's thrashing of Houston Kashmere.

“We played well and dominated the entire game (against Kashmere),” Mascheck said. “We want to be peaking come district time and we played a lot better than we did the previous week (against Wharton) and that’s the key. We’ve been looking for to improve week by week and day by day.”

It is unlikely the Roughnecks will be able to repeat last week's dominance in tonight's matchup with La Marque at Griggs Field, which comes in with a 3-0 mark. The nondistrict tune-up begins at 7:30 p.m.

The La Marque offense will not be hard to figure out, but stopping its speed is going to be a daunting task for the ’Neck defense. The Cougars running attack comes in averaging 298 yards and a solid 5.7 yards per carry.

The player to watch will be sophomore running back Perry Preston, who has 552 yards on 77 carries and three touchdowns in just three games this season.

The Cougar air attack doesn’t present as big a threat on paper as quarterback Myles Launius has recorded just 97 yards in three games on 13-of-32 passing.

The Roughnecks will try to keep the La Marque backs from getting in space, but above all, they need to avoid getting shaken and play hard for 48 minutes.

“La Marque has won state championships, so they play with pride and intensity and the first thing we have to do is match their intensity from the get-go,” Mascheck said. “We also have to match the speed of the game — their entire team is fast. We need to do a great job playing assignment football and not let their backs get outside of us.”

The hard-nosed Roughneck defensive unit did that a week ago, holding the Kashmere Rams to 39 yards of offense and forcing four turnovers.

On the season, the defense has yielded an average of 161 yards per game, but Mascheck believes his team still can get better and clean up, which has equated to successful Roughneck seasons in the past.

“I think our tackling can always improve, but the most important thing is to create turnovers,” Mascheck said. “Great defenses create turnovers, and I don’t think we’re creating enough. We also just have to play our assignments because sometimes we try to do too much instead of our job."

Columbia will be facing and equally tough Cougar defense, which is giving up 175 yards a game to opponents this year.

Against Kashmere, Columbia looked balanced, rushing for 175 yards, led by Saylaion Dunlap’s 48-yard, two-touchdown game in about one half of work. The Roughnecks also threw for 105 yards, with running back Keithan Taylor, who caught four passes for 95 yards and two scores, the top target.

The quarterback duo of Michael Carlson and Josh Jimenez passed for 55 and 50 yards, respectively.

“I thought our offensive line has played a lot better, especially coming off the ball,” Mascheck said. “We also threw the ball better. Teams are stacking the box on us, and we have to throw the football. We did the other night and we just have to continue to build on those things.”

The Cougars have owned the series, winning eight out of nine meetings. The last encounter came in 2013, when La Marque posted a 31-0 shutout of Columbia.
