BAY CITY — The Bay City Blackcats scored 17 unanswered points in the first quarter and didn’t look back in their 27-8 win Friday night over the Sweeny Bulldogs at Memorial Stadium.

With the win, the Blackcats improved to 2-1 for the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-2.

“I think we’re getting better,” Bay City head coach Lupe Florez said. “We probably had a little over 300 yards of offensive. We just need to learn how to score in the red zone and get better at short yardage situations.”

The Blackcats came in having scored just 18 points total in their first two games. But they had little trouble in the first half against Sweeny, enjoying a comfortable 24-0 lead at halftime.

Bay City finished the night with 375 total yards of offense while the Bulldogs had only 85.

“Our kids gave a great effort,” Sweeny head coach Randy Lynch said. “They’ve been doing that all year. It’s a new system for them and a new coaching staff. But it’s week three and we need to start executing better, especially on the offensive side.

Sweeny’s only touchdown of the night came from a kickoff return in the third quarter by wide receiver Donovan Banks.

Running back Hodari Williams had 15 carries for 105 yards for the Blackcats while quarterback Dylan Davidson had 11 carries for 94 yards and 1 touchdown.

Banks had three carries for 29 yards while quarterback Evan Green had nine carries for 25 yards. The Bulldogs finished with 85 yards on the ground and only 5 from the air as Green went 2-of-17 with five interceptions.

“I thought our defensive kids played really well. We gave up a pick-six and put them in a bad position in the first half. Bay City scored 24 points in the first half,” Lynch said. “We couldn’t overcome that. Offensively, it’s been like that all year. We move the ball, turn the ball over, get penalties and we can’t do that. We have to do better on offense.”

Davidson went 20-of-28 for 133 yards as the Blackcats compiled 143 passing yards.

Wide receiver Darryl Florez had eight receptions for 65 yards.

The Blackcats, who missed two PATs in their 12-0 win over Columbus, ended their kicking woes with a 32-yard field goal by Daniel Cuevas early in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead.

Not long after, Davidson scored on a 71-yard run to extend the Blackcats’ lead with 4:54 in the first quarter.

“We knew we were going to have a tough battle tonight,” Davidson said. “We practiced hard. Last game, we had a rainy field. This week, we came back and played hard. We were ready. We came out excited and got on them.”
