Needing a win in a bad way, the Sweeny Bulldogs got one.

It wasn't pretty by no means, but a win is a win.

"We needed it, that is for sure," Sweeny first year coach Randy Lynch said. "I am not sure it felt like it, but we definitely needed a win for the kids sake. Our kids played real hard, they really did. We got delayed with a change of schedule, but so did everybody else. Our defense played extremely well and held them to less than 100 yards."

The 2-0 win against Van Vleck evened Sweeny's record to 1-1 on the year as they head to Bay City (1-1) for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Friday at Blackcat Stadium.

Sweeny's only score was a safety right before halftime when they pinned the Van Vleck quarterback in his own end zone after he bobbled the snap while in shotgun formation.

"Our defense has been playing well and has kept us in both ball games," Lynch said. "Those kids have bought into what we are trying to do defensively after last giving up so much last year. They are playing well and hopefully that will continue."

The Bulldog defense is giving up just 174 offensive yards a game so far.

"I think it has been a complete unit trying to get to the football," Lynch said. "Our defensive staff has done a good job getting those guys in the right position. We are fixing to go through another opponent who is very athletic and fast, so we are going to have to make sure we stay on our assignments and get to them as quickly as we can."

In a series that started back in 1974, this is only the 15th meeting between both squads and currently are tied at 7-7.

Offensively, the Bulldogs are averaging 145 yards in two contests so far. It is an offense that took a big blow with last week's win against the Leopards.

"We tried to simplify some things last week, but when an offensive lineman goes down on the third play of the game, that is kind of tough," Lynch said. "Then you lose another one in the third quarter, and both are gone for the year, so you have to make adjustments.

"We have two offensive linemen that are gone for the year and two more that might not play on Friday night," he continued. "It just has be next man up which entails a lot of high schools with injuries."

So far, senior quarterback Evan Green (9-30, passing, 3 INTs) has had a tough time. Out of the 229 rushing yards for the Bulldogs, Green is also the leading rusher (40-104 yards).

"Obviously for what we do offensively the offensive line is very important," Lynch said. The other thing is where we have two or three good plays and then we have a missed assignment or penalty that just hurts us. We preach to them all of the time about being disciplined but sometimes they don't follow directions correctly."

The Blackcats are coming off a 14-6 loss to Bellville, who are ranked No. 4 in Region III by theathleticsdepartment.com.

Bay City's defense is playing tough, allowing just 126 yards a game with 209 of those yards on the ground and 43 by air.

"They are just so much improved from a year ago, and their secondary is as fast as it gets," Lynch said. "Their linebackers are flying to the ball, but it is the front three guys who are causing the problems and they stymied Bellville who is one of the top teams in the area."

Offensively, the running game is led by Hadari Williams (33-155 yards, TD) and Dylan Davidson (19-126, TD). Davidson (20-42, 241 passing yards, TD) is also under center.

The contest will be broadcast on FM KKHA 92.5.
