EL CAMPO — After a two-hour rain delay, the Angleton Wildcats once again got off to a fast start only to see their offense stagnate and suffer numerous miscues.

Unlike last week’s win over Galveston Ball, the Wildcats paid for their mistakes, resulting in a 21-13 loss to the El Campo Ricebirds on Friday night at Ricebird Stadium in El Campo.

Up six and in the middle of an 11-play drive, Angleton sophomore quarterback Seth Cosme was picked off by El Campo’s Zarian Baylor at the Ricebird 9-yard line with 6:08 to play in the third quarter.

After a 45-yard return and a 15-yard Angleton personal foul penalty, Ricebird quarterback Brock Brandl hit receiver Antoine Greer for a 30-yard touchdown two plays later, which proved to be the game-winner, giving the Ricebirds a 14-13 lead they would not relinquish.

The Wildcats (1-1) went three-and-out on their ensuing possession and the Ricebirds (2-0) drove down the field and capped off a 14-play, 59-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run from Nery Enriquez to make it 21-13 with just under 10 minutes to play in the game.

The Wildcats’ final two drives ended on downs and a punt.

They could have had one more opportunity to mount a comeback with less than two minutes to play and all of their timeouts, but last week’s workhorse running back B.J. Foster muffed a punt, giving the Ricebirds the ball and the game.

In the first quarter, it was the Wildcats who looked destined to run away with the game.

After forcing a three-and-out on their own, a 25-yard return from Angleton’s Jason Williams set his team up on the El Campo 46.

Cosme found Foster running down the middle of the field with a step on a defender for a 46-yard touchdown strike on their first play from scrimmage to make it 7-0 with less than two minutes gone in the game.

Several plays later, Williams returned another punt into El Campo territory, setting up a 2-yard touchdown run from Tamerick Williams.

That gave the Wildcats a 13-0 lead midway through the first quarter, but they did little the rest of the way.
