SWEENY — Sometimes all it takes is some luck and a stout defense to win a game.

That was the formula the Sweeny Bulldogs had to employ Friday as they pulled out a 2-0 victory over Van Vleck at Bulldog Stadium.

The only two points came at the end of the first half. Van Vleck was backed up on its own 3-yard line with just 2 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Sweeny called timeout before time expired to allow the Leopards to run one more play. Van Vleck quarterback ZeVaunte Easton mishandled the shotgun snap in the end zone and had to fall on it for a safety as time ran out in the half.

Those two points held up.

“I have never been a part of a 2-0 ballgame,” Sweeny coach Randy Lynch said. “I am speechless. Our defense played outstanding.”

Some would have let the half expire, but offensive coordinator Shannon Permenter helped Lynch call timeout before the clock went to 0:00.

“They had a few bad snaps from center in shotgun,” Lynch said. “It was just one of those things. We got lucky. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.”

On a night when lightning delayed the start of the game by 45 minutes, neither offense could get out of the starting blocks as the game progressed.

Sweeny’s defense smothered the Van Vleck offense and limited the Leopards to 73 yards of total offense. The Bulldogs limited the Leopards to 11 yards of offense in the first half. Jordan Jones intercepted a pass for the Bulldogs while Everett Alford recovered a fumble for Sweeny. Alford’s fumble recovery came with 1:35 left in the game to seal the victory for the Bulldogs (1-1).

The Bulldogs struggled on offense, as well. They were limited to 179 total yards for the game.

“Offensively, we just don’t execute. And that’s on me,” Lynch said. “It’s one of those things where we’ve got to get better. And we will in time. Give Van Vleck a lot of credit. Those kids play extremely hard, as well.”

Sweeny had just 68 yards of offense in the first half.

Van Vleck had an opportunity to take the lead in the first half. A muffed punt snap by Sweeny punter Donovan Banks gave the Leopards the ball at the Sweeny 30 with 7:45 left in the first half.

A 25-yard field goal attempt from Colton Carrion fell short for the Leopards to leave the game scoreless.

The Bulldogs’ defense was also able to stop the Leopards after a fumble gave Van Vleck the ball at the Sweeny 21 with 6:57 left in the first quarter. Sweeny held on downs.
