SWEENY — Falling to rival Columbia 24-7 in week one wasn’t was the Sweeny Bulldogs had in mind.

Despite a performance where miscues and turnovers plagued the Bulldogs, coach Randy Lynch couldn’t underestimate the value of a meaningful game, nor could he knock his team’s effort.

“There is only so much you can do in the practices,” Lynch said. “For us it was new with the new coaches on staff that are new to the kids including myself. Our kids gave great effort and they played hard, but we just can’t have those miscues.”

Sweeny will be looking for their first win in another high-profile game this week when they kickoff at 7:30 p.m. as they host the Van Vleck Leopards Friday at Bulldog Stadium.

Like Sweeny, Van Vleck is also looking to get into the win column after falling to Boling 28-14 in their season opener.

While it’s not the Battle of the San Bernard like in Week 1, Lynch believes this game holds weight as a rivalry game.

“It’s another rivalry game” Lynch said. “People don’t realize it, but Sweeny and Van Vleck used to be in the same district for a long time. They’re about 20 miles apart and there’s a lot of people that know each other. We’re both searching for their first win and they’re very talented.”

Van Vleck is led by Zeyvante Easton, who struggled against Boling, but has the ability to get the ball to his receivers for big plays. Running back Demitri Monroe and receiver Darius Williams each had a couple of long catches last week and will be monitored heavily in this game.

The goal will be to make Easton as uncomfortable as possible on defense and to simply execute on offense to have a shot.

“They have a lot of sill kids on offense,” Lynch said. “We’re going to have to play well and put pressure on the quarterback. Offensively, we just have to execute the offense, clean up the blocking assignments, hang on to the football and not play from behind the chains like we did last week.

"There aren't a lot of play calls for third and 48."

The Bulldogs put themselves in some bad spots after being called for 13 penalties for 110 yards.

Even more counterproductive were two turnovers deep in Columbia territory.

Sweeny quarterback Evan Green, who finished with a rushing score and 128 total yards, threw an interception after driving to the Columbia 17 late in the third quarter with the Bulldogs down 10-7.

The Bulldogs also had the ball at the Roughneck 30 in the first half, which led to three points on the ensuing possession.

"We can't get in the red zone and have turnovers," Lynch said. "We focus on just playing and do your job. Just execute the play that's being called. Turnovers are turnovers and don't want them to happen, but some times they do.

"It's just one game but it's one of those things that if we didn't have those things occur, the game might have been different."

This is the 22nd meeting between the Bulldogs and Leopards with Sweeny leading the series 13-7-1.
