ANGLETON — There were a lot of things the Angleton Wildcats did right in their 20-0 season-opening win over Galveston Ball, but head coach Ryan Roark saw a few phases of the game his team could have executed better.

“It was encouraging to pitch a shutout,” Roark said. “We did some good things, but we were sloppy at times on offense with some first-game jitters and blown assignments. Other than those jitters and sloppy play on offense, I thought we played pretty well overall.”

Angleton and El Campo kick off at 7:30 p.m. today at Ricebird Stadium in El Campo in another tough test for the Wildcats. The Ricebirds are coming off a 59-10 dismantling of the Gregory-Portland Wildcats on the road.

El Campo boasts an explosive offense, led by running backs Deaderick Hollaway and Jerric Chapman. Holloway rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns, while Chapman almost reached the century mark in eight carries with 91 yards.

The Wildcats also will have to be wary of quarterback Brock Brandl, who threw just eight passes last week but completed five of them for 141 yards. Three hook-ups went to Wesley Arrambide, covering 122 yards.

The guys in the trenches are just as imposing as the skill players, Roark said.

“It’s a typical El Campo team,” Roark said. “It’s a really good coaching staff and good football community over there, and we’re going to have our hands full with them. They’re very physical up front, and their offensive and defensive line will get after you. They play smashmouth El Campo Ricebird football.”

Angleton has to feel good heading into Ricebird land.

The Wildcats held Ball to 193 yards of offense and forced a pair of interceptions. With a few returning starters anchoring the unit, the Wildcat defense simply lived up to its expectations. They will need to do so again to slow down El Campo.

“We fully expected to play well on defense,” Roark said. “I expect that in all three phases of the game, but particularly on defense with the returning starters. We expect to come out every week and play at a high level defensively.”

The offense wasn’t too shabby, either.

The running back duo of B.J. Foster and Tamerick Williams combined for 240 rushing yards on 29 carries behind solid play from an experienced offensive line. Foster also had touchdowns runs of 47 and 38 yards.

That was huge, considering they passed for only 29 yards, mostly due to the 10 penalties for 100 yards the Wildcats compiled.

If they clean that up, Roark believes his team will be just fine, especially with their big offensive line leading the way.

“We’re encouraged about where we’re headed,” he said. “I’m concerned about the 100 yards in penalties on pass plays. It was about 113 yards called back. We only had 29 yards passing, but it could have easily had 100 more yards tacked on to that if it weren’t for penalties.

“We just have to clean stuff up and continue to work hard and get better.”

This will be the 17th meeting between the two teams, with the all-time series tied 8-8. It’s also the first meeting since 2011, which Angleton won, 36-34.
