WEST COLUMBIA — A third-quarter offensive surge and a defensive stand proved to be the deciding factor as the Columbia Roughnecks defeated Sweeny in their annual Battle of the San Benard rivalry game 24-7 Friday at Griggs Field.

Columbia (1-0) held a slim 10-7 lead at the half, but the Bulldogs came out and mounted a long drive that consumed more than six minutes of the third quarter and looked poised to take the lead. The Bulldogs drove down to the Columbia 17, but Roughneck defensive back Chandler Cook intercepted a pass from Sweeny quarterback Evan Green and returned it to the Roughneck 13 to end the threat with 5:17 left in the third quarter.

“It was huge,” Columbia coach Brent Mascheck said of the Roughneck defense’s stand. “It was a total team effort defensively. Our defensive group played well. We had some little mistakes here and there, but you expect that the first game of the season.”

Sweeny coach Randy Lynch said it was mistakes at crucial points in the game that proved costly.

“Obviously you want to win,” Lynch said. “The reason you play the game is to win. I was really disappointed in a couple of things – the turnovers in critical times are a concern. We’ll learn from it and we’ll move on.”

Shortly after stopping Sweeny on the opening drive of the second half, Columbia running back Keithan Taylor scampered through the Sweeny defense on a 50-yard touchdown run to put the Roughnecks up 16-7 with 4:08 left in the third.

Two-minutes later, Columbia took over on downs following a fake punt attempt that was stopped short of a first down at the Sweeny 34. Two plays later, Taylor scored on a seven-yard run with 1:48 left in the period. Taylor ran in the two-point conversion for the final score of the game.

It was part of a big night for Taylor and fellow backfield mate, Saylaion Dunlap, who both eclipsed the 100-yard mark. Taylor rushed for 101 yards on six carries while Dunlap had 149 yards on 17 carries.

“Those two are going to be our bell cows,” Mascheck said.

“They are going to carry the load for us this year. They are two very good backs. They will be the first ones to tell you what the offensive line does a lot for them.”

It was Dunlap who had the first score of the season for Columbia.

He capped a 59-yard drive with a 17-yard touchdown run with 9:19 left in the first quarter.

Taylor set up the touchdown with a 39-yard run down to the Sweeny 17.

Sweeny bounced back as they drove 70 yards to tie the game. Green dove into the end zone from a yard out with 4:25 left in the first to knot the score at 7-7.

Dylan Knight caught a 20-yard pass from Green and Donovan Banks had a 19-yard catch that were key plays on the drive.

Karch Kaspar kicked a 34-yard field goal with 5:15 left in the first half to give Columbia a 10-7 lead. The scoring drive came after Daleon Harris recovered a Sweeny fumble at the Columbia 30 to stop a potential scoring drive.

Both teams return to the field next Friday with the Roughnecks hitting the road to Wharton and Sweeny hosting Van Vleck.
