A Navarro sophomore is fighting for his life in Arizona following a dirt bike accident last week.
Michael “Mick” Pinegar, 15, was camping with family in Forest Lakes, Arizona attending a family reunion when the accident happened on Tuesday, mother Heather Pinegar said.
“It had been raining and the dirt road was slippery and wet,” she said. “I don’t think he realized that, and his bike slipped and hit a boulder. The impact threw him off the bike, and he hit head first on the ground.”
While waiting on the helicopter to take him to a hospital in Phoenix, Heather said her son was fighting and moving around in the ambulance, while holding his father’s hand.
“He was fighting really hard, and the doctors said that was good news,” she said. “He was thrashing around, moving his arms and legs. He was holding my husband’s hand really tight; so tight, he made my husband’s hand bleed.”
The paramedics were able to sedate Mick, and get him transported to the hospital, where he is being treated for a traumatic brain injury and a broken vertebra, Heather said.
“His brain is bruised and swollen, but he was breathing well when he got here,” she said. “They just put him in a medically induced coma, because the pressure was getting a little too high in his brain, but it is getting better now.”
Since Mick was put into the medically induced coma, Heather said he has started to show some signs of improvement, but is far from out of the woods.
“He is doing a lot better,” she said. “The doctors said all cards are on the table. He could recover and walk away from this or it could be life-threatening.”
Mick, who will attend Navarro High School this fall as a sophomore, plays football for the Panthers, and loves motocross, Heather said.
“Everything revolves around dirt bikes,” she said. “His passion in life is motocross, football at Navarro and longboarding. He loves the Navarro program; it is his life. They have nicknames for him. They call him Pine Tar 2.0 and he loves it. ”
Heather described her son as 6-feet 3-inches tall, 210 pounds, olive skin, brown hair, crystal blue eyes and with a heart of gold.
“Mick is super loving,” she said. “He is a really sweet boy and he has had a huge impact on a lot of people. He really loves his friends. He has great friends. He loves his teachers and his coaching staff.”
As Heather and Spencer take turns staying with their son and watching over him, she said she can’t help but have hope.
“Our main thing is we don’t want to treat it like a tragic thing, we want to treat it with hope,” she said. “The most important thing is there is so much hope. So many people have shown so much love. There is a lot of prayer going on right now for him.”
People of all faiths and all walks of life have reached out to the Pinegar family, offering up words of encouragement and prayer, including Navarro Superintendent Dee Carter.
“We are so sorry to hear about this tragedy,” Carter said. “We are in prayer for Mick and his family. We are hoping strenuously that he will get better quickly.”
With the Pinegar family in Arizona, a GoFundMe page was set up to help the family with any expenses.
“We are raising this money to help his family pay for the cost of the mounting medical expenses, and their family’s expenses to be in Phoenix instead of their home during this difficult time,” according to the page.

“This is a great community,” she said. “We just want people to come together and pray for him. We know that there is huge healing power in the heavenly father and that God works miracles.”
A prayer vigil has been scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Navarro High School parking lot with Frieden’s Church pastors Dave and Sonja Phillips leading the prayers
