WEST COLUMBIA — Opportunities were there for the Sweeny Lady Bulldogs to put runs on the scoreboard Thursday night in the opener of their Region IV quarterfinal series against Needville.

However, those opportunities didn’t convert into runs as the Lady Bulldogs dropped the first game of the series, 3-1, against their District 28-4A rivals.

Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at Columbia High School.

“We left too many runners on base,” Sweeny coach Melissa Hansen said. “Bottom line, we have to come out and hit or it’s going to remain a close game if we don’t hit like I know we can hit.”

The Lady Bulldogs (29-8) were trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth when they put together their biggest threat offensively. With one out, Brianna Amey walked, Katy Schaefer singled and Cassidy Myers walked to load the bases.

After Needville forced Amey at home to get the second out of the frame, Allie Robertson singled to left field. Schaefer was able to score, but Myers was thrown out at the plate by Needville left fielder Anna Gadway to end the inning.

“That was an inning where we tried to push Cassidy across and tie the game,” Hansen said. “I would do it again.”

Needville would go on to add an insurance run in the top of the seventh, when Kylie Bachert scored on an error after leading off the frame with a single.

Needville pitcher Sarah Adams was able to keep Sweeny’s hitters off balance all night. Adams allowed five hits while striking out two and walking three.

Sweeny’s Lauren Myers didn’t have a bad night either, allowing two earned runs on five hits. She struck out three and walked four in the complete-game loss.

Needville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Megan Crosby hit a hard shot that Schaefer couldn’t handle at shortstop. Casey Ramey, who singled to lead off the inning, scored on the play.

Sweeny had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the third when Maddie Stewart and Schaefer both singled and ended up at second and third with two outs, but Adams coaxed a fly ball off the bat of Brenna Bailey to end the threat.

Needville added to its lead in the top of the fifth.

With Ramey on second, Kylie Matula hit a single to center field. A strong throw home kept Ramey from scoring on the play, and a throw back to second from catcher Cassidy Myers got Matula trying to advance.

But on the throw to second, Ramey scrambled to the plate to score.

Hansen said even though they are down in the series, she is confident her team can bounce back.

“As young as we are, they are going to bounce back,” she said. “We will be ready to go. We have some good leaders. We are a good team that’s willing to fight. They have shown that already in the playoffs.”
