Coach Long moving from East Bernard to Corpus Christi Carroll

CORPUS CHRISTI - Corpus Christi ISD has hired Jerry Long as the next Athletic Director and Head Football Coach of Mary Carroll High School.

Long is currently in the same job with East Bernard High School. His Brahmas have achieved 5 district titles in a row, alongside regional and the 2012 state championship.

"Coach Long joins CCISD with an outstanding pedigree and a proven track record," CCISD Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez said. "His ability to lead and influence all student athletes both on and off the field was evident during the interview process. He is among the state's best and brings very high expectations. I look forward to Coach Long and his family joining the CCISD family."

His resume includes:

East Bernard High School - AD/Head Football Coach (2004-2015: 99-27 record)
Refugio - Assistant Coach
Gregory-Portland - Offensive Coordinator
Orange Grove - Offensive Coordinator
Woodsboro High School - Quarterback and defensive back

Long will take over at Carroll High School next week. His son, Thomas, is a sophomore who will play for the Tigers.

CCISD conducted a search to fill the position since Tony Trevino left at the end of March to become the Athletic Director at San Antonio East Central.

Jerry Long is returning home, or at least close to it.

Long, a Woodsboro native, was named the new head football coach and athletic coordinator at Carroll High School on Monday, and he is returning to the area where he cut his teeth as an assistant coach.

Long has spent the last 10 years turning East Bernard into a state power, but he spent much of his assistant coaching career in South Texas, coaching at Refugio and at Gregory-Portland for former coach George Harris. Long added his parents live in Rockport and his wife's parents live in Woodsboro.

Long will take over for former coach Tony Trevino, who resigned to take the athletic director position at San Antonio East Central.

"There is an excitement to get back to South Texas and see coaching friends I haven't seen in a while," Long said on his cellphone on Monday afternoon. "It's just that familiarity that is exciting to us."

A CCISD spokesperson confirmed through an email that Long will earn around $105,000 a year at the school, and he said he plans to start next Monday.

Long comes to Carroll with an impressive résumé both as an assistant and head coach. East Bernard won a state title in 2012 and was a state semifinalist in Class 3A Division II in 2015. Long compiled a 99-27 record at East Bernard, and his overall head coaching record is 103-33. Long's first head coaching job was also at Woodsboro in 2005 when he went 4-6 before going to East Bernard in 2006.

He also served as an offensive coordinator at G-P for Harris and was the OC at Orange Grove under his father, Don Long.

Along with the success in football, CCISD Athletics Director Brenda Marshall said those who interviewed Jerry Long were impressed with him as far as an athletic director. During Long's tenure, East Bernard's athletic program won six titles in four sports, including cross-country, softball and boys track.

East Bernard finished second in the Class 2A Lone Star Cup in 2014, which awards points to teams for overall athletic success.

Marshall said she, Dr. Roland Hernandez, Carroll Principal Kelly Manlove and a consultant helping the district were in the interviews.

"He didn't just talk football to us. He talked about a lot of other things and how they do things (at East Bernard)," Marshall said. "You could just tell listening to him his passion of how he deals with kids. It seemed a good fit for Carroll High School."

Long is the second highly successful Class 3A coach to take a job in the new District 30-5A as former Cameron Yoe head coach Rick Rhoades was named the coach at Gregory-Portland last month. Rhoades also coached with Harris at Refugio. But Long said the two teams never met in the playoffs, as they were in different divisions.

"We were probably fortunate we didn't have to mess with them, and I'm sure he'd say the same thing," Long said with a chuckle.

Long said he will use the Slot-T offense and will use a multiple defense. When he starts work next Monday, he said he will begin work to implement his schemes, but said the biggest thing will be getting to know the campus.

Carroll will be in the South Zone of District 30-5A with King, Moody, Flour Bluff and Veterans Memorial.

"No. 1 is meet the people," Long said. "Coach Trevino has been gone for a while, and there are a lot of people, players and coaches that are on pins and needles, and once you put a name with a face they will feel more comfortable with the fact I'm here. We will use the time we have to instill in the kids the kind of work ethic I'm going to expect and what's needed to be successful. You've got to get that going, and then you focus on your scheme and X's and O's."

Long has two sons. Trevor is a redshirt sophomore football player at Rice University and Thomas will be a junior at Carroll next year.
