FREEPORT — Local track and field athletes from Brazosport, Columbia and Sweeny will try to advance to the Class 4A Region IV track and field meet today, when they compete in the area meet at Hopper Field.

The meet will consist of athletes from Districts 27 and 28, with events kicking off at 10 a.m. The teams representing District 27 are Wharton, Sealy, Brookshire Royal, El Campo, Bay City and Columbus. The top-two finishers in each event advance to the regional meet.

The first round of field events begin at 10 a.m., with the boys long jump and shot put and the girls discus, high jump and pole vault.

On the track at the same time, the girls 3200-meter finals will take place, followed by the boys race.

At 11:30 a.m. the second round of field events will begin, with the boys triple jump, pole vault and discus and the girls long jump and shot put.

The final field event for the boys and girls will begin at 1 p.m., with the boys high jump finals and the girls triple jump finals.

After a break from competition, the remainder of the running events will take place in 15-minute intervals beginning at 4 p.m with the boys and girls 400-meter relay.

The rest of the schedule is as follows: 4:15 p.m., girls and boys 800 meters; 4:30 p.m., girls 100-meter hurdles, boys 110-meter hurdles; 4:45 p.m., girls and boys 100 meters; 5 p.m., girls and boys 800-meter relay; 5:15 p.m., girls and boys 400 meters; 5:30 p.m., girls and boys 300-meter hurdles; 5:45 p.m., girls and boys 200 meters; 6 p.m., girls and boys 1,600 meters; 6:15 p.m., girls and boys 1,600-meter relay.

Brazosport girls athletes to watch for include: Jasmyne Harris, district champion in the triple jump (38-feet, 9 1/4 inches), long jump (18-1) and high jump (5-2); Mercedes Strambler, district champion in the discus (122-5), second in the shot put (36-7); the 400-meter relay of Harris, Lornell Fuller, Katie Traylor and Destiny Watkins (49.56 seconds); and Watkins, district champion in the 100 meters (12.77).

Brazosport boys to watch for include: Michael Champ, district champion in the 800 (2:05.56); Antonio Williams, district champion in the discus (135-7 3/4); and Rivaldo Rios, district champion in the 1,600 (4:49.69) and 3,200 (11:06.89).

A couple of Columbia boys will have a good shot at a regional berth, as Richard Hooper claimed both the triple jump (47-7) and long jump (23-3) district titles. He also finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (15.31). Also winning a first-place medal at the district meet was Steve Perkins in the shot put (47-9 1/2) he also finished third in the discus (130-2).

On the girls’ side for Columbia, Kimberly Carr will be a force to be reckoned with in the hurdles. Carr swept both events, running 16.05 in the 100 and 46.52 in the 300.

The Sweeny boys had two district champions, with Sunne Rodriguez taking the pole vault title (14-0) and Derek Davis winning the 200 meters (22.65).

For the Lady Bulldogs, C’Erra Higgins was the lone first-place finisher, winning the district title in the 200 meters (25.48). She will be one of the favorites in the event today.

The Sweeny girls 400-meter relay team of Jaidyn Fontenette, Remi Allotey, Jayla Johnson and Higgins finished second to Brazosport at the district meet (49.61), but has been a favorite to make it to the state meet since before the season started.

The regional meet is April 29-30 at Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Javelina Stadium.
