#4 Cameron Yoe (11-1) vs. Grandview (12-0)
Last week: Cameron Yoe def. Malakoff, 45-44; Grandview def. Winnie East Chambers, 42-14
Players to watch: Cameron Yoe RB Traion Smith, WR Sicory Smith; Grandivew QB Zach Smith, RB Earnest Crownover
Key matchup: Grandview passing game vs. Cameron Yoe secondary
Breakdown: Cameron Yoe won its 19th straight playoff game last week, but it had to work to get it.
The Yoemen fell behind Malakoff, 32-7, in the first half but scored twice before halftime to begin a stirring comeback.
“I was very proud of them,” Cameron Yoe coach Rick Rhoades said. “I think it showed a lot of heart and resilience. One of the the things we talk to them about all the time is how to handle adversity in life and on the football field. Sometimes things aren’t going to go your way, and you have to handle it.”
The Yoemen figure to face some adversity against Grandview, a team that is averaging nearly 51 points per game and hasn’t scored less than 42 in any contest.
Baylor-bound QB Zach Smith has 3,690 yards and 44 TDs passing. His top target is Josh Nash, who has 1,322 yards and 20 touchdowns, and RB Earnest Crownover balances the offense with 1,054 yards and 14 scores on 142 carries.
“They’re very good, and their offense is very explosive,” Rhoades said. “They score a lot of points, and their quarterback does a great job. We’re going to have to do the best we can to try and contain him. But not only is he good, but they have a good receiving corps and running backs.”
Cameron Yoe has a pair of Smiths it hopes can counter Grandview’s Smith. RB Traion Smith has rushed for 2,386 yards and 39 touchdowns, while WR Sicory Smith has 61 catches for 1,131 yards and 13 TDs.
The difference in Grandview between this year’s unbeaten crew and last year’s that was 5-5 and missed the postseason is its defense. The Zebras are allowing 20 points per game, down from 38 last season.
