Punting / Field Goal Question

This probably easy to answer, but I don't know the answer. Why does a punter kick yardage start from the line of scrimmage, but a field goal is measured from the place of the kick? It would seem they should be the same. Thanks for the help.

The placement of the field goal is usually fixed(unless it is a dropkick) and the punter's is not.
