Friday at 7 pm in Waller.

I've been wanting to see this matchup for years and it's really a shame that it's happening now and not 3-4 years ago

Good luck necks

Ehh, Sealy played Navasota pretty close for 3 quarters, albeit from all accounts Eppler was off target all night, 18-40 I believe. Playoffs are here, and Navasota has not been tested for 4 quarters yet. It will happen soon, and I would rather it be early.

Roughnecks ready to roll with Rattlers

By JOEL LUNA joel.luna@thefacts.com | Posted: Friday, November 13, 2015 2:00 am

WEST COLUMBIA — All systems are go for the Columbia Roughnecks, as they take a shot at Class 4A’s No. 1-ranked team and defending state champion, Navasota today in the Division I Region III bidistrict playoff round at 7 p.m. today at Waller ISD Stadium.

In a pick’em contest, there would be no question who to circle as the winner. But according to Columbia coach Randy Lynch, his team cannot wait to go out and compete.

“We are looking forward to it,” he said. “We are going to be playing so many young kids tomorrow, they don’t know any better I think. But we are looking forward to it.”

Columbia (7-3) will hook up with the Rattlers (10-0) as the visiting team.

The Roughnecks are coming off a 49-8 spanking at the hands of El Campo last week, but more importantly, Columbia lost quite a few players because of injuries.

One of those nicked up was leading rusher and senior, Dakarius Bell.

“Hunter (Grayson) is still out, but Dakarius is going to be OK. He is going to tape it up and play,” Lynch said.

Bell (194 carries, 1,534 yards, 7.91 per carry, 22 touchdowns) tweaked a knee right before halftime against the Ricebirds.

Grayson (23-of-44 passing, 263 yards, TD, three interceptions) was playing quarterback and linebacker when he went out the week before against Bay City.

“When you have a three-year starter who is out and replace him with a sophomore, it is a little different world,” Lynch said. “But we will not make any excuses, it is football.”

Navasota comes into the bidistrict round with a 26-game win streak, an offense that scored 620 points and a defense that gave up only 85 points for the season, including just 13 in District 11-4A.

“All week, we’ve not sugarcoated to them, we know what is in front of us and this is how it is going to be and they have to be ready,” Lynch said of the challenge that is playing the defending champs. “They have an explosive offense, and are putting numbers up like a year ago. You have an all-state quarterback (Shelton Eppler) and one of the top receivers (Tren’Davian Dickinson) in the state.

“It is a big challenge for our offense, but we have to hang on to the ball as much as we can,” he said. “One thing we need to do is score in the red zone. Last week we were there three times and came up empty with no points. We can’t do that against any team, but especially against a Navasota team.”

Eppler (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) is following up the state title run from last year with another fantastic season (167-of-252, 2,981 yards, 47 TDs, INT). In the past three seasons, Eppler has passed for 10,854 yards and 146 touchdowns.

Many of those scores have gone to the University of Texas-bound Dickinson (66 catches, 1,191 yards, 20 TDs), who, believe it or not, is one touchdown away from Jordan Shipley’s state record of 73 touchdown catches.

Navasota faces a Columbia defense that gave up 309.9 yards per game this season, recovered 10 fumbles and had two interceptions.

“It is important we get off to a good start, but we have to hang on to the ball and we have to make some stops against Navasota and that is all you can do,” Lynch said. “We are going to throw everything at them and have fun with it and make the most of it.”

Columbia will need every possession available and will have to come away with some points on each one.

Junior quarterback Josh Jimenez (32-of-62, 569 yards, five TDs, three INTs) will face the challenge of a defense giving up just 8.5 points per game.

The Rattler defense is loaded with impressive defenders, such as D.J. Harris (85 tackles), Jabril Hunter (65 tackles), Tremayne Creeks (63 tackles), Da’Tron Taylor (60 tackles) and Brandun Ramos (60 tackles) to name a few.

“Yeah you would like to be playing them in the region final, but now we meet them in Week 1 of the playoffs,” Lynch said.

The winner of this game will get the Jasper-Brownsboro winner in the area round.

Are the Rattlers running it more this season, or do they live by the pass? Not sure we really know because of their light schedule.....too hard to tell. Do they have a RB with at least 700 yds? or maybe a couple or three that add up to at least 1000 yds???

BTW, what's the stats this season look like so far for Eppler?

Navasota ran a lot last season and seasons before that. Remember, we lost our star RB before the start of the playoffs last year.

As far as this year goes, the stats that I found could be a little off:

Rushing- You will see Philio (JR) 81-791 yards & Norman (SR) 40-461 get most carries. There are two others with almost 150 yards on the season.

Eppler- 167-252 with 1 INT on the year. He has 2981 yards passing through 10 games.

Receiving- No surprise here, Dickson with 1191 yards on 66 receptions and 20 tds. K Baker with 594 yards and 12 tds, Richardson with 682 yards and 5 tds, 4 others with atleast 100+ yards on the season with 1 of those with 244 yards #8 Blair who is out for the season. Blair was instrumental in Navasota's wins last year especially against Liberty Hill and Argyle. # 32, Soto, is also out for the year. Both with ACL injuries I believe.

Receiving yards per game: 301.5
Rushing yards per game: 146.6
Defense with 17 INTs

NO upset here. Columbia struggled very bad last week against EC. Losing Bell before the half definitely did not help them at all. Sota is strong with the pass and the Columbia offense will not be able to slow them down.

Rattlers pull away from ’Necks

By JOEL LUNA joel.luna@thefacts.com | Posted: Saturday, November 14, 2015 2:00 am

WALLER — Willing to pull out any trick in the bag, the Columbia Roughnecks came into Waller ISD Stadium on Friday with the idea of dethroning Class 4A’s No. 1-ranked and defending state champ Navasota in a bidistrict playoff bout.

But the Rattlers had too many weapons on both sides of the ball as they controlled the action throughout their 52-16 win over Columbia.

After Daniel Arana recovered an onside kick to start the contest, Columbia’s upset bid could not have opened any better.

“We practiced it all week and we had everything we wanted,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “But then they stripped the ball from (Dakarius) Bell, who had a great gain, and here you are trying to call the next play and the next thing you know they got the ball going the other way.”

On the ensuing drive after the onside, Tremayne Creeks scooped up the ball after Bell had it ripped out while mustering a 5-yard gain. Creeks took it 55 yards for the score to put the Rattlers ahead, 7-0, with only 54 seconds gone off the clock.

Down a score and facing a team on a 26-game winning streak, the Roughnecks gave themselves good field position early in the contest. On the next kickoff, Tranquail Harris returned the ball 40 yards to the Rattler 33-yard line.

But Columbia’s second turnover in the first quarter came moments later, as Josh Jimenez was intercepted by Eric Lattimore.

Navasota’s passing game was supposed to go wild, but the running of Keyondrick Philio (10-142 yards) kept the Roughneck defense working overtime as he had several big scampers in the first half.

“I thought No. 23 (Philio) did a good job for them running the ball, which kept us off balance,” Lynch said. “Tonight, they were a bit more balanced than what they’ve been.”

The Roughnecks hurt themselves again on their third series when Bell took a handoff on second-and-6 and leaped over a Rattler defender on his way to a 30- to 40-yard gain, but a holding penalty nullified the yardage.

“Turnovers just hurt us, and they do a good job over there, and they have a heck of a football team — you know that, I know that,” Lynch said. “Going into it, I knew the turnovers were going to be a key. With those guys over there, you have to play a perfect game and control the clock. We had a good game plan and the kids played hard, and that is all we can ask.”

The Rattlers made it 14-0 when Shelton Eppler found Noah Steptoe for a 14-yard score with 3:04 left in the opening quarter.

After the score, Columbia got another great kickoff return, this time by Richard Hooper, who gained 48 yards to the Navasota 42-yard line.

On fourth down-and-6, the Rattler defense sacked Jimenez for a 4-yard loss and took over on downs.

Seven plays later, it was 21-0 after Eppler called his own number for an 8-yard score early in the second quarter.

One of the intriguing players in the game for Navasota was wide receiver Tren’Davian Dickson, who was looking to tie the state record for touchdowns of 72 currently held by Jordan Shipley. And he did so with 2:23 left before halftime. Eppler found Dickson for a 32-yard score to make the score 35-0 and giving Dickinson his 72nd career touchdown reception.

With the Roughnecks driving at the 14-yard line and less than 10 seconds left in the first half, Jimenez was intercepted by Dickson at the 2-yard line and he took it all the way back for a 98-yard score. Navasota led 42-0 at halftime.

The Navasota defense had only given up 85 points on the season, but the Roughnecks were not going to be denied, especially with Bell running the ball the way he was. In the third period with 1:07 left, Bell found the end zone on an 8-yard run.

After the score, Bell came right back and bulled his way up the middle for the two-point conversion.

“There is no doubt, I have to go back and look, but that kid (Bell) could be the leading rusher in Columbia history,” Lynch said. “And he also could be the all-time leading scorer, but he has been a blessing for us and is special. We are going to miss him and he is a good kid, and that is the most important thing.”

In the final quarter, Saylaion Dunlap added an 8-yard touchdown and punched in the two-point conversion to close out the scoring.

“What can you say, the turnovers for the first half just killed us. We gave them 14 of those points and we won the second half, if that means anything, but you have to play four quarters,” Lynch said.

Bell had 128 yards on the ground against a defense that was stingy all year in his final game for Columbia.

Columbia finished the season at 7-4, and Navasota will face either Brownsboro or Jasper, who play today.

Rattlers be damn good! Necks just ran into the wrong team too early, but I know they will be back in the next two years...

Yeah, Navasota is pretty dang good. Not quite sure they looked as dominant as the last couple years but they also looked like they were just in cruise control last night. They might be able to get it done again this year but I think it'll be a little tougher for them. They're as good as anyone but I don't know that they're in a league of their own

I think I counted at least 4 sophomores starting for WC on defense and 4/5 offensive lineman were juniors. Rb #8 is a junior and a couple other juniors on defense.

WC oughta be improved next year

Hopefully we can do this again with Navasota in the future. We'll be back and better and I know they'll be back

Other than the HISD playoff teams, I'm not sure they could have beat any other Region 3 teams.
