STAFFORD — With nothing to lose going into the season finale, the Brazosport High football team decided to get creative.

The Exporters scored their first three touchdowns on either laterals or reverses in a span of just more than eight minutes in the second quarter.

“We just unloaded the playbook,” Brazosport fourth-year head coach Ben Rudolph said after the Exporters’ 64-36 loss to undefeated Stafford on Friday night at Spartan Stadium. “There was no reason to keep the plays in there.”

It was that creativity that helped Brazosport (1-9, 0-5) stay within a touchdown of the No. 9 team in the Class 4A-Division I until the 8:26 mark of the fourth quarter.

Stafford (10-0, 5-0), however, was unstoppable on offense — scoring on 11 of their 12 possessions — en route to its first undefeated season in program history.

They made Brazosport pick its poison.

In the first half, Spartans senior quarterback Curtis Robinson passed for three touchdowns and rushed for another one. He finished with 361 total yards.

In the second half, it was Stafford junior running back James Brown (31 carries for 185 yards) rushing for two of his three touchdowns.

Brazosport sophomore quarterback Jarvis Davis (98 yards passing, 87 yards rushing and two total touchdowns) picked up confidence throughout the game as he had several successful quarterback keepers, culminating in a 6-yard touchdown run that cut the Spartans’ lead to 43-36 with 10:03 in the fourth quarter.

The 36 points were a season-high for the Exporters, who enjoyed quite the highlight reel during that 21-point second quarter.

After falling behind 20-0 on a 90-yard pass from Robinson to senior wide receiver Caleb Parker, Brazosport got on the board when Davis threw a pass to senior wide receiver Navontae Darthard.

Darthard then pitched the ball on a hook and ladder to senior running back Jeremiah Credit, who scored on a 64-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 20-8.

Credit, who is being recruited by Army, Navy and Utah, had three receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown in his final prep game, and also rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.

After the third Robinson-to-Parker touchdown of the game, Davis threw a lateral pass to Darthard, who found a wide open sophomore wide receiver Joseph Martinez in the end zone for a 59-yard reception.

The Exporters scored their final touchdown of the second half when Darthard — on a reverse — connected with sophomore wide receiver Jalen Johnson for a 21-yard touchdown pass.

Credit scored on a 64-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half, trimming the Spartans’ lead to 37-29.

The Exporters defense hung tough, shutting the Spartans down twice inside the 10-yard line in the third quarter. But Stafford freshman kicker Kirvin Bonilla connected on field goals of 29 and 25 yards to extend the third quarter lead to 43-29.

The Spartans finally found some breathing room after Brown ran for a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns of 5 and 15 yards, respectively, and junior running back Cameron Montgomery capped the scoring a 44-yard touchdown run with 2:14 left in the game.

Friday marked the final prep football game for 15 Brazosport seniors.

“I was pleased with our overall effort, and our attitude was great,” Rudolph said. “The kids never quit, and it is always tough to say goodbye to a close senior class like this one.”
