EL CAMPO — Facing an El Campo run game that went wild in the second half, the Roughnecks suffered a 49-8 loss Friday in District 12-4A Division I action at Ricebird Stadium.

Even with the loss, Columbia had a few scenarios it needed to unfold in which it could still qualify for the postseason. And it did just that because Bay City beat Needville, 35-32, which was by less than the 17 points the Blackcats needed to make it in, which would have created a three-way tie.

At one point in that game, Bay City led 28-10.

As for Columbia (2-3, 7-3), the ’Necks will have to lick their wounds and get ready for a playoff opponent.

“It was one of those games where it started well, we took the opening series and moved it down the field, but just didn’t execute in the red zone,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “But we came back and punched it in and we had opportunities early, and we just did not capitalize early and it just snowballed on us.

‘We have several injuries now, and we’ll see where we go from here. Bottom line is if we get in we are going to have to heal up quick,” Lynch said.

It looks like Columbia will face No. 1-ranked Navasota in the bidistrict round of the playoffs. No other details were available at press time.

The Ricebirds scored 21 unanswered points in the third period to blow it open, increasing their 21-8 halftime lead to 42-8.

Much of that damage was done by senior tailback Kevin Dove, who ran for 105 yards on seven carries and a score in the second half, before he exited with an injury in the final period.

Sophomore teammate Alontae Harris was even more impressive in the second half, running the ball just eight times for 139 yards and two scores. Doves’ score went for 37 yards, while Harris scored on runs of 38 and 32 yards.

“We felt good at halftime and we left some points off early in the first half, but in this second half it just got away from us,” Lynch said. “They are a good football team and they played well.”

In the second half, El Campo ran the ball 26 times for 292 rushing yards.

The Roughnecks were missing running back Dakarius Bell, who tweaked a knee right before halftime.

“I wasn’t going to put a kid in jeopardy, and whether we were winning or not we were not going to put his health on the line,” Lynch said.

Columbia came out in the first quarter, after getting the ball after the kickoff to start the game, and drove into the Ricebird 23-yard line. Much of that came off some big runs from Bell, but the drive stalled after a false start moved the ‘Necks back to the 28 to make it third-and-eight.

El Campo took over on downs and on its first play, quarterback Ernest Arrambide scooted outside and kept going for a 71-yard score to give the Ricebirds a quick 7-0 led.

But Columbia came right back as they rode on the back of Bell, who bulled in from the 2-yard line, finishing up a 45-yard drive that took nine plays. Then, Saylaion Dunlap hit Chandler Cook for the two-point conversion for an 8-7 lead.

The Roughnecks were put in good field position after Richard Hooper ran the kickoff back for 55 yards.

However, El Campo and its three-headed running attack came right back with Dove, Harris and Ernest Arrambide taking turns at the Roughneck defense.

Facing a fourth down and six at the Columbia 28-yard line, Ernest Arrambide found brother Wesley Arrambide in the end zone, who out jumped Dunlap for the touchdown. After Xavier Mireles’ extra point, the Ricebirds took the lead for good, 14-8.

Ernest Arrambide scored once more when he found Demarcus Williams for a 51-yard touchdown reception with 1:05 left before halftime to take the 21-8 lead into the locker room.

El Campo gained 539 yards of offense to Columbia’s 285.
