’Necks in need of a win

WEST COLUMBIA — The Columbia Roughnecks have an opportunity to make the playoffs with a win today, or could miss the postseason completely.

Columbia (2-2, 7-2) travels to El Campo (3-1, 6-3) for a big District 12-4A Division I showdown at 7:30 p.m. at Ricebird Stadium.

“The easiest way for me to explain it is, if we win, we are in. Depending on the number of points we win by, we will either be the No. 2 seed or No. 3 or No. 4,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “(If) we lose and with points involved we could wind up as the No. 5 seed.”

Needville takes on Bay City on the road at 7:30 p.m. today.

If Columbia and Needville win, the Roughnecks will be either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed depending on if the Blue Jays win by more or less than 17 points.

If Needville loses and the ‘Necks pull it out against the Ricebirds, Columbia will be the second seed.

If both Columbia and Needville lose, there will be a three-way tie with Bay City, and a whole mess of points will be involved in a scenario that could take a while to figure out.

Whoever does finish as the No. 4 seed will face No. 1-ranked Navasota in the bidistrict round.

The Roughnecks are coming off a 33-point second-half explosion against Bay City last week. Columbia rode its big second half to a 46-21 win over the Blackcats.

Dakarius Bell was the workhorse for Columbia, as the senior gained 272 yards on 27 carries and scored four touchdowns.

“You know, Dakarius is a very unselfish kid, because in the past few weeks we tried to move him to the fullback position thinking that he could do something there,” Lynch said. “But we are getting our fullback back and that will allow us to feed Dakarius the ball more this week as well.

”Bell (179 carries, 1,436 yards, 8.02 per carry, 21 touchdowns) will be battling for the district’s rushing title against El Campo’s Kevin Dove (180-1,404 yards, 7.80 per carry, 22 TDs) as he trails Bell by 32 yards.

“El Campo, they are a good football team and they are going to run through the Dove kid and the (Alontae) Harris kid,” Lynch said. “Their quarterback (Earnest Arrambide) runs the offense pretty good and is also a runner. But they are going to run it at you and it could be a tough night for our defense.”

Harris (87-831, 9.55 per carry, four TDs) is the second back, with Arambide (99-420 yards, seven TDs; 24-of-49 passing, 451 yards, six TDs) contributing.

El Campo is averaging 359 yards of offense per game and has outscored district opponents, 161-82.

It will be important for the Roughneck defense to wrap their arms around the Ricebird runners or it could be a long night.

“That is the key, if they can’t tackle then they can’t play defense and we’ve made some personal changes due to injuries or just people not getting the job done,” Lynch said.

Columbia will be missing its own signal caller in Hunter Grayson, who went out last week early in the third period and did not return. He will not be in action against the Ricebirds and had started the past two ball games.

Junior Josh Jimenez, who came in last week and threw for 119 yards mostly in the second half, will get the nod.

“It was good to see him throw the ball like that last week,” Lynch said. “We are also working Saylaion Dunlap and he will be the backup to Josh.”
