Bell leads ’Necks to must win

By JOEL LUNA joel.luna@thefacts.com | Posted: Saturday, October 31, 2015 2:00 am

WEST COLUMBIA — Needing a win to stop a two-game district losing streak, the Columbia Roughnecks exploded for 33 points in the second half to blow away Bay City, 46-21.

The win Friday night at Griggs Field didn’t necessarily clinch a District 12-4A Division 1 playoff berth for the ’Necks (2-2, 7-2), but it inched them closer to a sixth consecutive year of making the postseason.

“It feels great to get back in the winning column and we needed that bad,” a relieved Columbia coach Randy Lynch. “I told the kids that they showed a lot of grit being down at halftime, and the way they came out, for a while it was going back and forth, but our defense just stepped up.”

The “D” wasn’t the only reason the Roughnecks kept the Blackcats to just seven points in the second half. The dominance of senior Dakarius Bell did, too, as he found the end zone four times.

“Getting Bell back involved in the game was big for us,” Lynch said. “We had to use him at fullback last week, so we decided to put him back at his tailback position and he did a great job.”

During the final 24 minutes, Bell rambled 145 yards on 11 carries, chewing up clock and yardage. He finished with 272 yards on 27 carries.

Trailing 14-13, the Roughnecks started the second half by marching 76 yards on 10 plays, including connections by Josh Jimenez to Darius Harris for 22 yards for a first down, then a 31-yard touchdown on fourth down. Bell accounted for 45 yards on the ground.

The Blackcats answered right back when backup running back Lawrence Smith broke a couple of tackles and rambled into the end zone for 31 yards to get Bay City back on top, 21-19.

And then the Bell tolled again.

On first down at the 25-yard line for Columbia, Bell went right and kept going down the sideline, pushing off a few tacklers then outracing the rest for a 75-yard score.

“We made a few adjustments at halftime, but bottom line is we started executing our offense,” Lynch said. “It felt good to get some points on the board, but more importantly, it feels good to win again.”

After opening the season with six consecutive wins, the Roughnecks had been blown out their last two district games, by Stafford (40-14) and Needville (55-34).

Bay City proved in the first half they would challenge the Roughnecks, too. Leading rusher Murray Baugh gave the Blackcats the initial lead in the game with a 4-yard scamper.

But Columbia came right back as Bell finished up a 10-play drive by eluding several would-be tacklers on a thunderous 47-yard run into the end zone.

In the second quarter, Bell gave Columbia its first lead with a 2-yard score, again shaking off tacklers as he powered into the end zone.

After blocking a 29-yard field goal attempt by the Roughnecks, the Blackcats (1-3, 3-6) got back on offense and back into the end zone. It took them five plays to cover 80 yards, with quarterback Darryl Florez giving the Blackcats the lead back after the extra point by Andrew Smith, 14-13.

The drive was costly, though, as the Blackcats lost Baugh to a leg injury.

Florez (14-98 rushing; 6-for-13, 59 passing yards) also proved to be a thorn in the side of the Roughneck defense, but also was knocked out early in the final quarter to a leg injury.

That 75 yard run by Bell was huge...
