NEEDVILLE — Needville lost quarterback Logan Archer to an injury, but that didn’t stop the Blue Jays from pulling out a key Division I, District 12-4A victory.

With Archer out, backup quarterback Sean Smith came on and threw for three touchdowns, while the defense held Brazosport in check in the second half to secure a 29-21 win Friday night at Blue Jays Stadium.

Archer was hurt on the second drive of the game, but Smith stepped in and was 8-of-18 passing for 200 yards.

Needville’s defense slowed Jeremiah Credit in the second half and limited the Exporters to just 253 yards of total offense.

Credit (17 rushes, 156 yards) had first-quarter TD runs, covering 54 and 59 yards, as the Exporters jumped out to a 14-0 lead.

Two Needville drives stalled after Smith hit Jordan Harris and Bradley Rozner for passes covering 39 and 59 yards, respectively.

But the third time was the charm. Smith hit Myles Hackstedt for passes covering 19 and 12 yards. Then on third-and 14 from the 17, Dedrick Ketchum ran it in for the score with 6:49 left in the half.

Jarvis Davis was tackled in the end zone by Dylan Compean and Josep Butler for a safety, 6:24 14-9

Two penalties aided Needville’s next drive which ended when Smith hit Rozner for a 26-yard touchdown, upping its lead to 22-14 after three quarters.

After another Brazosport punt, Smith hits Hackstedt for a 15-yard touchdown on fourth-and four with 8:09 remaining.
