COLUMBIA (1-1, 6-1) AT STAFFORD (2-0, 7-0)
7:30 p.m. today at Spartan Stadium
OVERVIEW: This matchup provides the Roughnecks with an opportunity to get back on track after being side swiped by Needville last week and a chance to ruin homecoming for the Spartans.
The ’Necks defense gave up an excessive amount of yardage and points for the second straight game last week. A defense that was giving up just 204 yards per game just three weeks ago is now yielding 276 yards. But Columbia’s run game continues to be on the upswing, as Dakarius Bell (140 carries, 1,123 yards, 17 touchdowns) keeps piling up the yards and touchdowns. Both Keithan Taylor (35-482, 13.77 yards per carry) and Saylaion Dunlap (54-446, six TDs) also are contributing. In 11 previous meetings, the Roughnecks have owned Stafford, winning 10 of the 11 games overall.
The Spartans are feeding off a defense that gave up just 205 yards to El Campo last week and 149 to Bay City in their District 28-4A opener. For the season Stafford’s defense is allowing just 206.7 yards per game. The defense has recovered seven of 10 fumbles and has five interceptions — led by Edwin Godfrey’s two. This year, the Spartans have given up just 88 points in seven ballgames. Offensively, Stafford is averaging just 267.1 yards per game, with James Brown (118-552, 4.68 per carry, six TDs) leading the run game and Curtis Robinson (73-of-120, 844 passing yards, five TDs, four interceptions) handling the quarterback duties. Desmond Mathis (21 catches, 188 yards, two TDs) and Hezekiah Jones (20-259, two TDs) are the leading receivers.
