FREEPORT — Despite accumulating 140 yards in penalties, the Bay City Blackcats gunned down Brazosport by a 26-7 count in a 28-4A contest Friday night.

Bay City (1-1, 3-4) found itself behind in the first quarter when the Exporters lit up the scoreboard first on a nifty 55-yard scoring romp by senior Jeremiah Credit, who finished the night with 99 yards on 15 carries.

But that was Brazosport’s only score of the night as the Blackcats came back with 26 unanswered points, 23 of which came in the second quarter.

Bay City took advantage of a Brazosport fumble on an attempted punt return and immediately marched 35 yards to pay dirt with Murray Baugh scampering home from 14 yards out. The point-after kick by Devin Villarreal tied the score was tied with 11:56 remaining in the half.

Bay City had an interception return for an apparent touchdown called back on one of its 13 penalties on the night, nullifying a 65-yard would-be tally by ’Cat linebacker Elijah Ellis.

The Blackcats simply did it the hard way, driving 65 yards against the Exporter defense and scoring the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run by Baugh with 8:28 left before intermission.

Moments later, the Blackcats got a break when a snap went over the Brazosport punter’s head and into the end zone, giving the visitors a safety and 16-7 lead.

The opportunist Bay City defense again took advantage of the limp Brazosport passing game moments later with its second interception, this one returned 24 yards by Prinard Payne to the Exporter 23-yard line with less than two minutes remaining in the half.

Bay City took full advantage of the miscue when quarterback Darryl Florez skipped home from 3-yards out with 43 seconds left in the half.

Down by a 23-7 count at the intermission, the Exporters put together a nifty drive to start the second half only to have it die on downs at the Blackcat 10-yard line.

Along with their 140 yards in penalties, the Blackcats were outgained by Brazosport, 296-264 on the night but still managed to escape Hopper Field with a win.

The Blackcats were paced by the elusive Baugh, who clocked out with 123 yards on 19 carries, while Florez rambled for 66 yards on 13 carries.

For Brazosport, which was able to complete only three passes for 19 yards on the night, the running showed sparks but never ignited.

Senior Navontae Darthard sped off a game-high 112 yards on 13 carries while Credit rambled for 100 yards on 15 carries, including the electric 55-yard scamper for the squad’s only score.

Senior Jaleal Myles had 78 yards on nine carries.

Bay City controlled the ball between penalties to run the clock most of the second half and came up with the only score of the final 24 minutes when Villarreal hit a field goal from 23 yards out in the fourth quarter.
