SWEENY (0-0, 1-5) AT COLUMBUS (0-1, 3-4)

7:30 p.m. Friday at Cardinal Stadium

OVERVIEW: Sweeny is hoping for a fresh start as it opens the district season on the road against the Cardinals. If the Bulldogs are going to have a good start to district, they will need Malik Willer (60-486 rushing yards, two TDs) and Evan Green (73-135, 849 passing yards, 13 TDs) to play large roles. Sweeny’s offense is averaging 314 yards, but the defense is allowing 481.7. Clayton Gilbert (31-408 receiving yards, six TDs), Derek Davis (14-142, three TDs) and Donovan Banks (13-235, three TDs) will have to be at their best for Green. Sweeny leads the all-time series between the schools, 9-2-2, including last year’s 25-2 win.

The Cardinals dropped their district opener, 49-21, to Wharton last week, and will depend on Tramel Scott (58-496, seven TDs) to lead the run game along with Jaqai Shorter (67-414, two TDs). Scott leads Columbus with 44 points this season. Troy Pflughaupt (15-29, 306 passing yards, three TDs) leads from under center for Columbus. Laine Waddle (9-181, two TDs) is the leading pass-catcher for the Cardinals.
