LA MARQUE — With about three minutes to go in Friday’s game, La Marque running back Daequan Jones got the ball for the 13th and final time of the night and scampered 59 yards to the end zone, sealing a 32-20 Cougars victory over the Sweeny Bulldogs at Etherege Stadium.

Jones finished the night with 311 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries.

“The first thing, and I’m sure Daequan would tell you, is that you don’t pick up 300-and-whatever yards without your offensive line blocking their tails off,” La Marque coach Mike Jackson said. “That being said, Daequan is a tough kid. He does what we need to get the job done.”

The Coogs made the most of just seven offensive possessions in the game, finishing five of them with touchdowns. That success was, in large part, due to the fact the Bulldogs could not stop La Marque on fourth down. The Coogs finished the game four-of-five on fourth downs.

Sweeny scored first in the game after the two teams traded three-and-out possessions to begin the contest. But from there, La Marque capped off a seven-play 2:42 drive with a 2-yard plunge into the end zone by quarterback Jalen Williams.

After trading possessions that each ended with touchdowns, the game was tied 13-13 early in the second quarter. Williams scored a second time with another close-range strike — this from 1 yard out — that gave the Coogs a 20-13 lead going into halftime.

The teams came out from the locker room after the break, and that’s when Jones took the game over. At the end of the first half, he had 12 carries for 107 yards and a score. But over the final two quarters he carried the ball 18 times for 204 yards and the two touchdowns that helped put the game away.

Sweeny got the ball back, down 12 with two-and-a-half minutes left in the game and one last desperate attempt, but were thwarted when defensive linemen Marlon Ford intercepted a pass from quarterback Evan Green near midfield, sealing the outcome.

“A win is a win,” Jackson said. “It’s hard to win games in Texas high school football, and we’re not going to apologize for any win.”

Sweeny (1-5) finishes up nondistrict action and will have a bye next week.
