In a weather-delayed ball game that didn’t start until almost 9 p.m., the Columbia Roughnecks left Cowboy Memorial Stadium on Friday with a 29-28 win against Edna.

Trailing 28-22, Columbia mounted a 70-yard drive that took almost eight minutes off the clock. With less than a minute left to play, Jakarius Bell took a direct snap and, looking like he was going to run it in, pulled up and threw a jump pass to Julian Kay in the end zone.

Then Austin Lapointe kicked the extra point for the difference in the ball game.

“It was a battle from the start, and with the delay that lasted almost two hours, that just added to the night,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “It was a big physical football game, and we had some injuries and held some guys out, but by halftime had lost some more. But I am proud of the guys who stepped in and did the job.”

Edna did get the ball back, but the Roughecks defense stopped them from getting even close to scoring as time ran out.

The Cowboys scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth period as they ran for 224 yards on the ground with Landon O’Connor going 12 rushes for 105 yards and a score.

For the Roughnecks it was Bell who tolled the bell for 266 yards on 34 carries and two touchdowns. Columbia finished with 337 rushing yards and 15 yards through the air.

Columbia (5-0) will take next week off then start district play against Brazosport on Oct. 9 at Griggs Field.
