HITCHCOCK — Ball control and stellar defense didn’t make an appearance at Bulldog Stadium on Friday night, as both Sweeny and Hitchcock took turns in a game that looked more like the dearly departed NCAA College Football video game.

Nathaniel Walker rushed for 351 yards and five touchdowns as part of a 42-point first-half explosion by Hitchcock, which defeated Sweeny, 68-35, boosting their record to 4-1 to give Craig Smith’s team a jolt of momentum entering next week’s bye before starting District 14-3A play at defending Region IV champion Edna on Oct. 9.

The victory marked the first time the Bulldogs defeated Sweeny in a series that has gone more than four decades.

“This is sweet,” said Smith. “We’ve played them forever. They’ve been a quality opponent over the years. We challenged our kids all week long to be the first Hitchcock team to beat Sweeny, and they responded.”

While Sweeny quarterback Evan Green (three touchdown passes) did his best to trade shots against the Hitchcock defense, his defensive cohorts had no answer for Walker, who scored on runs of 44, 60 and 94 yards in the first 15 minutes of the game. He was just as lethal as a return specialist, as he set up the second of three Michael Parker scores with a 78-yard kickoff return midway in the second quarter.

Walker continued his assault on the Sweeny defense with a 64-yard scoring run early in the third quarter and capped his night with a 22-yard touchdown jaunt with 1:41 left in the third, which gave Hitchcock a 54-27 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Walker nearly had a sixth score but was tripped up at the 9-yard line, which eventually set up Parker’s third score midway in the fourth quarter.

“I’ll have to hit the sleds a little harder,” said Walker of the near-miss of the end zone. “It’s all good because it gave others a chance to get the ball.”

Hitchcock amassed all 368 of its first-half yards on the ground, as Parker accounted for 96 yards on seven carries. The Bulldogs finished the night with a staggering 626 total yards without attempting a pass.

Parker and Joshua Daniels each went over the 100-yard mark rushing, as Daniels added touchdown runs of 20 and 2 yards.
