DANBURY — The city’s police department is working to identify who damaged an already torn-up high school football field by leaving it riddled with tire tracks, officials said.
Police Chief Derek Dyson said police have identified two vehicles from Danbury ISD surveillance video they suspect are responsible for the destruction of the Humber Field turf Sunday morning, Dyson said.

“We do have several leads as far as potential suspects, but right now we are in the early stages of the investigation,” Dyson said. “We’re just putting all the pieces together.”
Investigators don’t believe a Danbury student or someone from a rival school caused the damage, he said. Police do think the person responsible is from the Angleton/Danbury area.
The chief is in the process of viewing more video as the investigation moves forward.
Officers were called about 5 p.m. Sunday to the football field at Danbury High School, where they discovered heavy tread marks up and down the field, Dyson said. Police believe the tracks came from a pickup or SUV.
District officials and police narrowed the time of the incident to about 4 a.m. Sunday based on the surveillance tapes, he said.
Although authorities have not been able to determine if more than one vehicle is responsible for the damage, they are positive it was all done by the same people, Dyson said.
While examining the damage Monday, officials also discovered tire tracks at the baseball field and on the playground next toDanbury ISD, Superintendent Greg Anderson said.
A similar incident occurred last weekend when someone ran a vehicle across the practice field, but the damage was not as severe as Humber Field, Anderson said. District officials don’t know if the two incidents are related.
Anderson said Danbury ISD began the process of repairing the damage to Humber Field on Monday, fertilizing and rolling out grass to fill in some of the lower areas.
The district doesn’t have an exact dollar amount for the cost of repairs, but estimate it will be a few thousand dollars, the superintendent said.
“It’s not so much in dirt, etc., but it’s going to take a whole lot of man hours to get that field looking like it should again,” he said.
Danbury’s junior varsity seems to be the only team immediately affected by the field’s damage as it was scheduled to play a home game Thursday against Palacios. The game now will be on the road, Anderson said.
“That gives the field through next week to be able to recover,” he said. “It should be in a condition to be able to played on, it may not look very pretty but it should be playable by that time.”
The Panthers’ next varsity football game is scheduled for Friday at Palacios, with the next home game Sept. 25 against Lutheran South, which will be the Homecoming game.
Danbury’s varsity, junior varsity and junior high football teams all play at Humber Field, as well as Danbury youth football and the Brazoria County Razorbacks amateur football team.
The turf already was in rough shape after Friday night’s contest against Saint John XXIII, a 6-0 Danbury win. Heavy rains at the end of the week left the field a muddy mess by the end of the game.
