ARANSAS PASS — You could bust out as many platitudes as you could muster, and few would be able to properly describe Aransas Pass' 36-34 victory over Ingleside Friday night.

Six overtimes will do that.

Aransas Pass quarterback Maverick Wagner's 19-yard scoring run and Jalen Hill's high jump into the end zone for the 2-point conversion gave the Panthers a 36-28 lead. But it wasn't until Ingleside quarterback Joseph Salinas was stopped short of the goal line on the 2-point try after his 1-yard TD run was AP assured of victory at Bo Bonorden Memorial Stadium.

Aransas Pass had done a job of stopping itself Friday night as any team could until it counted against their longtime rivals from Ingleside. The Panthers (1-2) won in the series for the first time in seven games and hold a 35-27-1 lead in the series dating to 1937.

Twice in the fourth quarter, AP was turned away via an interception by Bradley Burleson and in the waning moments when a Wagner to Connor Sullivan pass play was stopped a yard shy of the goal line. Plus, AP turned the ball over twice in overtime.

The Panthers drained 7 minutes, 10 seconds off the clock to open the second half. Hill's first TD run of the night, a 2-yarder, and Wagner's 2-point conversion pass to Sullivan staked AP to a 14-6 lead.

But back came the 0-3 Mustangs, whose offense was stilted most of the night. They moved 69 yards in 14 plays, tying the game at 14 on Salinas' 4-yard run and 2-point conversion pass to Jermaine Brown.

Both teams scored in the second overtime, AP on Wagner's 23-yard run and Ingleside on Marcus Boyd's 18-yarder. Neither team scored in the third OT and traded turnovers in the fourth. After the fourth OT, the teams swapped ends of the field because one end was so torn up because of play on the wet field as the start of the game was delayed 30 minutes.

Rudy Perez's 16-yard run and Boyd's 2-point run gave the Mustangs a 28-20 edge in OT 5 but AP responded with Hill's 15-yard scoring run and a 2-point run from Arismendi.

The Panthers missed a prime opportunity to take a halftime lead and sap the momentum after Ingleside's offense kicked in.

But AP wasted an impressive seven play march through the Mustangs' defense. A 22-yard gain by Tim Weekley started the drive and Arismendi later rushed for 34 yards before being dragged down by Boyd.

Later facing fourth and 8 from Ingleside's 11, Wagner dumped a pass to D.J. Roberson, who made it to the 1. He fumbled the ball into the end zone, however, and Ingleside recovered for the touchback 2:13 before halftime.

The Mustangs were able to pick up a first down but stalled and drained the rest of the first halftime.

Aransas Pass finally got its offense on track in the latter stage of the first quarter. Jalen Hill picked up 17 yards on a pitchout and added another 27 yards four plays later on a play originally designed as an end-around pass. But Hill found a seam and scooted to the Ingleside 26.

Aided by a pass-interference penalty, AP scored six plays later on Wagner's 1-yard keeper. The point-after attempt was blocked.

But the Mustangs responded with their only sustained drive of the half. Still operating out of the Spread, Ingleside stayed exclusively on the ground, driving 65 yards in 10 plays and only needing to convert one third down.

Salinas and Ferrell nearly split the load evenly, with Salinas carrying four times for 31 yards and Ferrell running six times for 34 yards, including the final one to tie the game at 6 with 5:22 before halftime. The Mustangs, too, failed on the conversion.
