WEST COLUMBIA — Hoping to see some different faces see action Friday night at Griggs Field, Columbia’s Randy Lynch got his wish in a 53-0 rout of Stephen F. Austin.

Not looking ahead to the San Bernard battle a week away, the 3-0 Roughnecks handled their business by halftime.

“We played pretty well, we executed pretty well and it was an opportunity to get a lot of kids some playing time,” Lynch said. “That was the plan all week long and we executed with the first-teamers and we had a lot of short fields to work with in the first half. But for the most part, it gave a lot of kids some time to play.”

Some of those reserves started seeing action as early as the third period when Columbia took a 43-0 lead after a 56-yard run into the end zone by Keithan Taylor on the ’Necks’ first offensive play of the second half.

Enter sophomore lefty quarterback Jarrett Brown and senior tailback Mason Keebler. Keebler ran for 42 yards on 12 carries and a 1-yard touchdown in the final period for the last score of the ball game.

Also back was senior Hunter Grayson, who sat out a week ago with an injury. Grayson played a couple of series in the first half under center and had one carry for 26 yards and a touchdown.

“He is still a little sore, but it was good to have him back in the fold again,” Lynch said of Grayson. “He executed well, and we need him back, especially on the defensive side. Josh did a good job tonight, and I was real pleased. It was just a good overall performance.”

From the outset, Columbia outclassed the Mustangs as senior Dakarius Bell scored the first two touchdowns. Bell’s first came when he went untouched to the end zone from 20 yards out to cap an eight-play, 55-yard drive.

After Austin’s 8-yard punt on fourth down, the ’Necks were in business again, this time at the 20 of the Mustangs. On third and 1, Bell scooted up the middle and hauled a couple of Austin players on his back into the end zone. After Austin Lapointe’s extra point, Columbia was up 15-0 with 2:20 left in the first quarter.

Austin couldn’t get anything going as the Roughneck defense held them to minus-5 yards on their first three drives. Their longest play from scrimmage was an 8-yard carry by Trevion Rodriguez. This was the same Rodriguez who ran all over Houston Washington last week for 295 yards.

Against Columbia, he had 8 yards in his first six carries.

With a homecoming crowd in attendance, the Roughnecks made it 22-0 when junior Saylaion Dunlap showed his speed and power off a direct snap, going for 20 yards into the end zone.

Grayson’s 20-yard touchdown run less than a minute into the second quarter made it 29-0, then Jimenez found Desmond Allen wide open 29 yards downfield just before halftime for a 36-0 lead at intermission.

“We still have a lot of work to do, and it is always a week to week thing, but I really liked the way our kids prepared this week and came out and performed well,” Lynch said.

Austin finished with 55 yards on offense and never crossed midfield. The Mustangs had only three first downs
