SWEENY — The Bulldogs’ homecoming did not end on a high note, as Bay City’s offense was able to produce both on the ground and through the air.

The Sweeny Bulldogs fell to the Blackcats on Friday night, 35-27. It was Sweeny’s first loss to Bay City in five years.

Sweeny got on the board first with a three-play, 31-yard drive capped by a 25-yard touchdown rush by Malik Willer with 8:27 left in the first quarter. It would be the Bulldog’s only lead of the night as Bay City tied the game on a 42-yard pass from quarterback Darryl Florez to wide receiver Montel Pointer with 4:12 to play in the first.

The Blackcats went up 14-7 with 9:58 left in the first half on a 40-yard rush by Prinard Payne.

Bulldog quarterback Evan Green answered with a 15-yard pass to Clayton Gilbert to tie the game at 14 with 5:48 left in the half.

The Blackcats struck again as halftime neared. With 38 seconds to go in the second quarter, Bay City’s Florez found his favorite target, Prinard Payne, in the corner of the end zone for a 17-yard score and 21-14 lead heading into the locker room.

Bay City received the kickoff to open the second half and struck quickly with a 67-yard strike from Florez to Pointer, going up 28-14 just 23 seconds into the third quarter.

Sweeny responded with a march near the red zone, but Payne swatted down a pass in the flat to force a Bulldog fourth down. A 38-yard field goal fell short, and Sweeny gave up the ball on downs.

With 1:56 left in the third quarter, Bay City again found the end zone with Lawrence Smith on a 14-yard run. The Blackcats led 35-14 to close the third frame.

The Bulldogs started to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter when Evan Green dumped a pass to Gilbert, who took it in from 7 yards out. The Bulldogs’ PAT kick was deflected, but Bay City’s advantage was cut to 35-20 with 4:54 left.

Sweeny would once more find paydirt when Green hit Donovan Banks in stride for a 15-yard touchdown through the air with three minutes left to make it 35-27.

But Bay City was able to use its running game to burn the clock. Sweeny’s attempt to return a Bay City punt with 10 seconds remaining ended under a sea of Blackcat jerseys as time ran out.
