A pair of Zedrick White touchdowns was enough for the Sweeny Bulldogs to get past Van Vleck, 14-7, late Friday at Burl McKinney Stadium in Van Vleck.

All three touchdowns were scored in the second and third quarters, with White scoring from 31 yards out in the second quarter after hauling in a pass from quarterback Evan Green.

In the third, White went for a 25-yard sprint into the end zone to give the Bulldogs the lead for good. Dillon Tate connected on both extra points.

The Leopards’ only score came in the second quarter, when Malik Mitchell raced 55 yards on a kickoff return.

Van Vleck ran for 233 yards on 38 carries.

Sweeny finshed with 273 yards of total offense on the night under Green’s direction. The first-year quarterback was 10-for-20 for 91 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Green also led the ground game, going for 77 yards on 12 carries. Malik Willer had four carries for 54 yards.

White also had four catches for 30 yards, and Clayton Gilbert made three catches for 27 yards.

The Bulldogs, who entered the season looking for a starting quarterback, settled on Green for the opener.

Penalties hurt the Bulldogs, as they racked up 80 yards in flags.

The Bulldogs (1-0) will host Brazosport on Friday at Bulldog Stadium.
