FREEPORT — Fort Bend Willowridge senior fullback Chad Zeno broke in Hopper Field’s fancy new turf with touchdown runs of 6, 40 and 9 yards Friday as the visiting Eagles eased past Brazosport, 26-13, in the nondistrict season opener for both squads.

The Eagles jumped off to an early 7-0 lead when Zeno capped a five-play, 40-yard drive with a 6-yard romp through the Exporter defense with 1:41 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Exporters countered with a score of their own in the second quarter, as senior running back Jeremiah Credit zipped home on a 31-yard bolt with 9:01 left in the first half. The Exporters elected to go for two points following the dandy touchdown run, but failed when Credit was met at the line of scrimmage by a host of Eagle defenders.

Willowridge stretched the lead back to seven, 13-6, when Zeno rambled down the middle on a 40-yard scoring sprint for what turned out to be the final score of the first half.

Things did not start out well for the Exporters in the second half. After taking the second half kickoff, the Exporters were forced to punt out of their own end zone. A short punt gave the Eagles the ball on Brazosport’s 30. A 15-yard penalty followed, which set Willowridge up at the 15.

It took the Eagles four plays to cover the 15 yards with Zeno once again doing the honors, this time from 9 yards out.

That would turn out to be Willowridge’s only offensive touchdown of the second half as the Exporters used a swarming defense to hold the Eagles in check the rest of the way.

In fact the Eagles finished the second half with only 18 yards of total offense after racking up 156 yards in the first half.

However, the straw that may have broke Brazosport’s back came early in the fourth quarter when an Eagle defensive back swooped in and swiped a pass at the Exporter 35-yard line and zoomed in for six points, giving the visitors a commanding 26-6 lead with 10:41 left in the contest.

Brazosport, led by sophomore quarterback Jarvis Davis, refused to throw in the towel, coming back to score with eight minutes remaining on a nifty 60-yard drive, which culminated in a 1-yard option sweep by the speedy signal-caller.

A key play in the drive was a 40-yard pass from Davis to Credit. After Kevin Garcia converted the extra-point kick, the Exporters trailed by what turned out to be the final score, 26-13.

Brazosport, which finished with 236 total yards compared to 174 for the Eagles, saw one drive deep into enemy territory die when Angel Trevino came within a whisker of hauling in a pass in the end zone. But an Eagle defensive back was able to foil that effort at the last moment.

The Exporters also had a golden opportunity following Davis’ touchdown run when Credit recovered an onside kick at the Eagle 30-yard line. But the drive stalled on downs moments later, and Willowridge took over possession.

Brazosport’s defense held the Eagles to only 18 yards rushing in the second half, 15 of which came on the early second-half scoring drive.
