HALLETTSVILLE — It wasn’t pretty, but the Columbia Roughnecks fought hard for a 29-15 victory against Hallettsville on Friday at Brahmas Memorial Stadium.

The contest, which had more than 200 yards in penalties, was tied with less than 10 minutes remaining. But a big defensive push by the Roughnecks was enough for them to pull out the win.

“It was a win against a good football team, no doubt,” Columbia Roughneck coach Randy Lynch said.

Down by eight points midway through the third quarter, Halletsville went on a seven-play, 64-yard drive with quarterback Scooter Adams finishing it off with a 20-yard scoring scamper.

Adams used the same moves to score the two-point conversion to tie the score at 15-all late in the third period.

But Columbia had a good answer — a nine-play, 61-yard drive, with Dakarius Bell picking up 31 of them, including the final one — to give the ’Necks a 21-15 lead with 9:22 remaining.

The running of Adams kept the Roughneck defense on its heels in the first half, but it was a different story late in the ball game.

On Halletsville’s first offensive play after the ’Neck score, Adams tried handing off to Kaden Hardt. But the push by the defensive line jumbled everything up, before the ball came loose and the Roughnecks came away with possession.

“I thought the defense really stepped up in the second half,” Lynch said. “They caused some turnovers, which was critical, and like I had told you, penalties and turnovers were keys for a victory.”

Columbia used the short field with Bell (28-155, four TDs) again finding the end zone from the 1-yard line to give the ’Necks some breathing room.

Junior quarterback Josh Jimenez found Justin Pugh for the two-point conversion to put it away.

The ’Neck defense held the Brahmas to less than 100 yards of offense in the second half. They also held Adams to minus-10 yards on his final four carries when the Brahmas were trying to get back into the ball game.

“They really stepped up and started flying to the ball, and early on, we had stunts, and they weren’t running them properly,” Lynch said. “But they finally started doing what they were supposed to do, and a lot of these kids were playing their first game.”

Columbia fell behind late in the first quarter when Adams (14-95 rushing, two TDs) juked his way into the end zone from 30 yards out with 1:43 left. Kraegan Matula added the point-after to make it 7-0.

“He (Adams) is very talented, and he is just a sophomore, so they have themselves a good one right there,” Lynch said.

The ’Necks answered, as Bell ran for 67 yards on their next drive before finishing the push with a 1-yard score. Karch Kasper tied it up with his extra point.

After a Halletsiville fumble, Columbia’s Jimenez connected with a wide open Desmond Allen for 39 yards to place the ball at the 1-yard line of the Brahmas.

Bell took a direct snap and scored his second touchdown. On the extra point, a low snap forced Saylaion Dunlap to chance it on the ground, but he prevailed for the two-point conversion to bring the score to 15-7.

“He (Bell) just has to get in shape, but we kept feeding him tonight and that is what we do,” Lynch said.

Columbia had 15 penalties for 140 yards in the ball game.

“Tonight it was the big penalties that really hurt us,” Lynch said.

The Roughnecks will host Liberty on Friday.
