Tiger Stadium is getting a new name.

The Sealy Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name the football stadium after late coach T.J. Mills during its June 17 meeting.

Mills, who passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on April 7, led the Sealy Tigers to four consecutive state championships in the late 1990s. He was a beloved member of the community and last August was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.

Mills coached one of the most notable winning streaks in Texas football has ever seen. He led the Sealy Tigers to undefeated seasons in 1994-1995 and extended the winning streak to 35 games the next season. A committee led by Bill Burttschell, president of Citizens State Bank, has deliberated for a month and recommended naming the stadium for Mills.

“This is really dear to our hearts and we feel like naming the football stadium after T.J. would be the least we can do for T.J. and his family. It would honor him and be a great honor for the school. There has been nobody like him. T.J. had a passion not only for football but for Sealy,” Burttschell said.

Superintendent Sheryl Moore accepted the recommendation and expressed appreciation for Mill’s legacy and the committee’s work.

“What happened those four years has set a tone for the town. I think it has a lot to do for how generous people are to the district because I think there were some bonds and feelings that were established through that whole time that we as a district are still reaping the benefits from,” Moore said.

Trustee Joe Mike Young put the renaming recommendation to vote and Trustee Kathy Grigar seconded it. The board voted unanimously to name the stadium T.J. Mills Stadium. The field name will remain Tiger Field.
