WEST COLUMBIA — Columbia’s bats came alive in Saturday’s early-morning bout with Sealy as the Roughnecks poured it on with a seven-run fifth to pull out an 11-5 victory over the Tigers.

Columbia (1-1) jumped to a 3-0 lead over the Tigers with a run in the second inning and two more in the third, only to have the pesky visitors come up with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning, scoring all five runs on just one hit.

Sealy scored its fourth-inning runs when Columbia starter Mason Cage dug himself into a hole by walking the first two Tigers, then moments later giving up a two-run double to Kaleb Monak.

Cage got out of further trouble by getting the next three hitters out on a grounder, a strike-out and a lazy fly to right.

Columbia countered with a run in the fourth to stretch the lead to 4-2, only to have Sealy tally three in the fifth without the benefit of a hit.

A pair of walks and two infield errors by the Roughnecks opened the flood gates, giving Sealy a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the fifth.

Columbia responded with Cage’s towering home run to right center on the first pitch of the inning to knot the score at 5.

Cage, who had his second straight four-hit game (4-4), was just the jump-start the Roughneck offense needed.

With one out, Clayton Wiley drew a walk and Wade Hill was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout for out No. 2, the ‘Necks got a big break on an infield error, followed by a bases-loaded walk to force in one run, an infield hit for another run and a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double by Jonathan Motal.

Cage made his second trip to the plate in the big inning count as he ripped a run-scoring double to left center to push across the final run of the game. The game was called moments later due to the two-hour game limit rule.

Cage went all five innings, giving up two hits and allowing two earned runs.

The southpaw finished with nine strikeouts while walking four. On offense, Cage was not only perfect in his four trips to the plate but he also came up with four runs batted in, while Motal bumped across the three runners with his triple, his second hit of the game. He also reached on a base on balls.

SWEENY 6, WALLER 4: On a cold and windy day, the Sweeny Bulldogs preserved its third straight victory in the Hit and Run Tournament by squelching a late Waller rally and putting a 6-4 victory on ice.

Sweeny (3-0), behind the crisp pitching of hard-throwing senior righthander Brett Bullard, were cruising along with a 6-1 lead entering the seventh inning only to have their counterpart Bulldogs erupt for three runs against reliever Cody Erikson.

Waller (2-2) got their runs on a double, a walk and a two-out, two-run single by Corbin Vines, followed by a triple to right by Cameron Rape to shrink a once comfortable lead to the final, 6-4.

Erikson managed to get out of the jam moments later by getting the final hitter to fly out to right to end the game.

Sweeny started the afternoon game with a run in the first inning as Dax McCleary and Jacob Mathis opened with walks, followed by a sharp single to left by Erikson to plate the first run of the contest.

Bullard cruised along with a 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when Waller tied the game on a two-out wild pitch.

Sweeny raced right back into the lead in the top of the fifth by bumping across four runs on three hits, helped along by two Waller errors.

In that frame, McCleary started things with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Mathis.

After Erikson worked a walk, McCleary romped home as Bullard beat out an infield single.

An errant throw by the Waller third baseman allowed the tie-breaking run to score.

With two outs, the local Bulldogs kept things going with a single to left by Hayden Fails, followed by an infield error.

Shawn Kelley, who finished the game with three hits in four trips, then made Waller pay dearly for the mistake, pushing across a pair of runs with a sharp double to left.

With Bullard on cruise control, the Bulldogs added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a double by McCleary, a single by Erikson and a fielder’s choice on a grounder by Bullard.

Bullard finished out his stint with two more strikeouts to finish the day with 10 while walking only two en route to the victory.

He gave up three hits and threw a one wild pitch, which allowed Waller to score its only run in his six innings on the mound.
