Region 2 Girls Final: Celina vs Argyle

Well it looks like a repeat of last year's regional final as Argyle and Celina both won their semifinal games tonite. Argyle defeated Gilmer 61-32 and Celina defeated Canton 79-50. The rematch will occur at noon Saturday at Texas A&M Commerce to determine which ranked team will represent Region 2 in the State Tournament. Argyle(30-5) ranked #3 defeated Celina in their last district meeting on Jan.30th 56-28. However, Celina(32-4) ranked #7 defeated Argyle in their first district meeting on 1/13 by a score of 56-51. Interestingly, in each case both teams won on the others court. Both teams are out of District 9 also. Both teams faced each other in the regional final at the same location last year as well. And I believe both teams were state-ranked Top Ten contenders last year like they are again this season. Looks like there's a bit more on the line than just the regional title and advancing to the State Tournament this year......maybe a whole lot of determination to go with it, huh? GO EAGLES!!!! I look for a close final score in this one. Celina has already proven to be a very worthy opponent. Whichever team wins will have earned their ticket, no doubt.

Eagles advance to state by knocking off Celina 46-28 in the Region final.

Much congrats to the Lady Eagles for a great win against a very proficient, high-scoring opponent....the Lady Bobcats from Celina. In most years, this Lady Bobcats team would probably be going to the State Tournament.....they were that good. Unfortunately, only one team from each region can represent, and again this season it is the Lady Eagles from Argyle. Seems like each region this season has their highest-ranked Top 5 team going to San Antonio for the State Final. All the teams will have a very legitimate shot at the title. Good Luck to the Lady Eagles in San Antonio.

The Argyle Lady Eagles(30-5) have been playing some very good basketball all season long. Their only two losses to Texas teams were to 6A power Plano West(25-5) 62-56 on Nov. 20th and to Celina(32-5) 56-51 on Jan.13th. The other 3 losses were against 3 nationally-ranked teams in the Naples(Fla.)Holiday Shootout Dec.29-31. If you subtract Argyle from Celina's schedule, the Lady Bobcats had 3 other losses.....6A powers Plano West 73-60 on 11/11 and Flower Mound(27-7) 55-50 on 11/22. Somehow they managed to lose to an also-ran Krum team in district play this season. Guess what? Plano West will be playing Flower Mound in their regional final this weekend. Overall, both teams(Argyle & Celina) have played upscale quality schedules this season and have been very successful doing so. Congrats to the Celina girls on a great season.

Argyle is definitely the best team in Region 2. They seemed to be on different level than everybody else. Hopefully, they will win state.
