PISD Board gives Palacios athletes a taste of
the real world, after two months of controversy
the Palacios Sharks continued to show strength
in numbers in support of Coach Bowden. While
many questioned the Boards dedication to “keep
students first,” a unanimous final decision to
reinstate Coach Bowden after six weeks on
paid administrative leave demonstrated a life
lesson, ‘One Voice Can Make a Difference.’
In a finial effort to sway the board the Palacios
Sharks Football team once again united at the
podium and approached the board. “To have a
coach that has been there for me from the start
to have to go through all this, it hurts, not just
me, but my team, and his family. I speak for
everyone when I say we love playing for Coach
Bowden,” stated Devin Reese. Fellow shark
Dominique Brazil continued “What I have been
hearing about this has made me very upset.”
Brazil acknowledged the rumors and remarks
around campus about Palacios Sharks current
record, “We didn’t play just for the record.”
Samantha Starrett acknowledged Bowden as
a family man and a role model. “He’s putting
morals in them (athletes) and to me that’s
so much more because when they graduate
not everybody is going to get a football
scholarship,” stated Starrett. “He is making
them better people, and that’s what Palacios
needs is better people.”
After concluding public comments Patty
Frankson made a motion directing the
Superintendent to reinstate the Athletic
Director Brad Bowden effective immediately.
The motion was seconded by Peter Zamarripa
at which point President Rick Cink then
commented publically:
“I don’t know which way the vote is going
to go, I think that I have adequately explained
to the board what my issue is, what you have
said tonight really didn’t sway me, but that
doesn’t matter. However the vote goes whether
it is for you or against you, I intend to respect
the majority. If it is to bring you back you
have my full support to be successful. If it is to
bring you back, I know that there will be a lot
of healing to do. If it isn’t to bring you back, I
guess there will also be a lot of healing to do
in the community also.”
“I’m sorry that you have went through this
six weeks of stuff, it was never intended to last
this long. You do have some boys that love you
and that’s important. My issue with you I’ll
never make public.”
“But I wish you luck. If it is to bring you
back I don’t necessarily care about wins or
loses either as long as people compete, and I
watched the boys a few games this year and
these boys did compete. I watched them over
there in Danbury when they lost a heartbreaker.
You played your hearts out in the mud and
rain. I watched you afterword bow your head
you weren’t hurt for you, you was hurt forthem because you were hurt
for them. I seen all that good
stuff, but I know what occurred
here also and It bothered me.
Now hopefully you swayed the
majority of the board to bring
you back.”
